trouble with maxbw
...aying with maxbw on links (as opposed to flows) in Crossbow, and I
have a couple of questions. First, the limts seem only advisory. The first
example has the main host talking to a zone that has 172.16.17.100
configured on znic0. When there is no maxbw, the throughtput is
as expected; when maxbw is 55M the throughput only drops to 76 Mbps:

Creating vegetation distance groups from one column
Hi R listers,
I am trying to group distances of nests to the vegetation into classes that
are define by (0-5m, 6-10m, 11-15m, 16-20m, 21-25m, 26-30m, 31-35m, 36-40m,
41-45m, 46-50m, 51-55m, 56-60m). Each row is a nest and all the distances to
the vegetation is in a column.
In plyr, I have tried - below script but I think I am going about this the
wrong way and am not successful.
#Veg index star = resp
Veg.index <- function(values, weights=c(0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40,

R Memory Usage Concerns
...he data from
the file really compactly (source for the script at the bottom of the
message):
[evan at t500 ~]$ python code/scratch/pymem.py
VIRT = 25230, RSS = 860
VIRT = 81142, RSS = 55825
So this shows that my Python process starts out at 860K RSS memory
before doing any processing, and ends at 55M of RSS memory. This is
pretty good, actually it's better than the size of the file, since a
double can be stored more compactly than the textual data stored in
the data file.
Since I'm new to R I didn't know how to read /proc and so forth, so
instead I launched an R repl and used ps to...

[LLVMdev] [PATCH / PROPOSAL] bitcode encoding that is ~15% smaller for large bitcode files...

> module level (done with option a), and uses signed VRBs for phis,
This is awesome! I tried it by creating a .ll of all of clang. Some sizes:
* clang.ll 490M
* clang.ll.gz 55M
* clang.ll.bz2 37M
* clang.ll.xz 27M
with the current bitcode:
* clang.bc 82M
* clang.bc.xz 27M
with the new bitcode:
* clang.bc 70M
* clang.bc.xz 26M
it looks like a nop run of opt also got a bit faster, from 10.451s to 10.176s.

SSD over 10gbe not any faster than 10K SAS over GigE
...em for vmware by using : zfs create SSD/vmware . I had to set permissoins for Vmware anon=0, but thats it. Below is what zpool iostat reads:
File copy 10Gbe to SSD -> 40M max
file copy 1gbe to SSD -> 5.4M max
File copy SAS to SSD internal -> 90M
File copy SSD to SAS internal -> 55M
Top shows not matter what I always have 2.5 G free and every other test says the same thing. Can anyone tell me why this is seems to be slow? Does 90M mean MegaBytes or MegaBits?
Thanks,
Derek

Strange memory issue
Like most, I have a test and a production env. Both are CentOS 5, Ruby
1.8.6, Rails 2.0.2, MySQL 5, and Apache. Both were setup using the
same procedure. Except for the hardware (test: Intel, prod: AMD) and
memory (test: 512M, prod: 1G), both systems are essentially the same
right down to the Rails env. Unfortunately, memory usage is very
different for each.
The test system has 2 mongrel

Resizing est4 filesystem while mounted
Greetings -
I had a logical volume that was running out of space on a virtual machine.
I successfully expanded the LV using lvextend, and lvdisplay shows that it
has been expanded. Then I went to expand the filesystem to fill the new
space (# resize2fs -p /dev/vde1) and I get the results that the filesystem
is already xx blocks long, nothing to do. If I do a # df -h, I can see that
