repeating categorical variable codes
.... For example, I have a categorical variable code attributed to a household=A and want to replicate the code for all member of the household, as given in column=B. I would like to have one sequence of categorical variable codes for individuals in column C. I have ~9000 values in A and my C will be ~52000. E.g (A) (B) (C) 1 1 1 2 2 2 1 1 2 2 3 1 2 2 2 Any ideas would be gratefully accepted by a novice R user. Ric [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

DJBDNS: very weird dnscache issue
...80000000 and 50000000 respectively. Playing with these demonstrated some highly counterintuitive results: 1) Setting the values lower (say, an order of magnitude lower) made the dnscache process run longer. 2) Shortening the relative gap between the two values (for instance, setting DATALIMIT at 52000 and CACHE at 50000) made it run for about an hour vs about 1 minute, load seeming to be about the same. 3) Running it with DATALIMIT not set was possible though it eventually failed anyways. 4) Running it with CACHESIZE not set was not possible at all. So the issue is currently still not resolve...

So I don't think it's the client. The smbclient code is very efficient, pipelining reads and writes. Is the server using async io ?

Comparing two time series?
I have got pairs of time series, where one usually is shorter (n typically about 5400) than the other (n typically about 52000). I would like to calculate the ccf for these series, but I haven't found a smart way to let the shorter "slide" along the longer one in steps. Manually splitting the longer series into shorter ones of the same length as the shorter is possible, but tedious. Any suggestions, either f...

odd behavior of "summary" function
Hello All, Using the standard "summary" function in 'R', I ran across some odd behavior that I cannot understand. Easy to reproduce: Typing: summary(c(6,207936)) Yields:: Min. *1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max.* 6 *51990 104000 104000 156000 207900* None of these values are correct except for the minimum. If I perform "quantile(c(6,

Managing rc.conf in FreeBSD?
I''m, still, working on converting my cfengine configs into puppet; one of the major hang-ups is the lack of any find/replace in puppet. So for those of you who are using FreeBSD and puppet, how do you manage you rc.conf? -- -- Perfection is just a word I use occasionally with mustard. --Atom Powers--

Distance and Aggregate Data - Again...
I appreciate the help I've been given so far. The issue I face is that the data I'm working with has 53000 rows, so in calculating distance, finding all recids that fall within 2km and summing the population, etc. - a) takes too long and b) have no sense of progress. Below is a loop that reads each recid one at a time, calculates the distance and identifies the recids that fall within 2

Implementing a ISDN home PBX
Hi, I would like to implement a inexpensive home PBX with Asterisk. I have an internal ISDN bus with 6 ISDN phones. I now thought, I connect a Fritz card to my Mehrgerateanschluss (Point-to-Multipoint) supplied by my provider and a second Fritz card to the internal bus. Will this work? Thanks for the help, Arik
