segfault / crash when asking for large memory via strrep()
We've had this more general topic on R-help, and also in R-devel recently.
There's one case here where I get the feeling R never gets into
swapping but more directly aborts possibly from a bug we can
more easily fix.
Today I've been working (successfully! - not yet committed) at
fixing str() for very large strings.
In this process, I've found that

i'm reading the lowdown on 3rd party repos with respect to centos
here:
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
and i have a couple questions and observations. first, the entry for
centosplus reads:
"Popular packages from this repository include: postfix with database
support, a rebuilt kernel with additional drivers & filesystem
support, php5 and mysql5."

segfault / crash when asking for large memory via strrep()
That would be because the product nc * ni overflows in
cbuf = buf = CallocCharBuf(nc * ni);
Since we disallow strings with more than 2^31-1 bytes we could test
and reject this. It might be more future-proof to change the
declaration of
int j, ni, nc;
to
R_xlen_t j, ni, nc;
and let the character allocation code reject, but that would create a
memory leak since the Free call

Installing hplip
I need an up-to-date hplip which supports my mfp. The install fails
with 'Cannot find net-snmp support' after it has reported a timeout
in -lnetsnmp. What package do I need to resolve this?

clib `open` writes a linefeed to stdout when used in the JIT
I'm having a problem with my code generating empty lines and it appears
to be the CLib `open` function generating an empty line when used within
the JIT-VM. If I compile my program to an exe file it doesn't happen. I
also have a lot of other code running in the VM without this problem,
it's somehow particular to `open`.
A chunk of my IR that calls `open`:

Linker failures in debug build - compiler/linker poll?
This probably just works around a layering violation. Can you provide the
cmake line that produces a broken build?
Cheers,
Rafael

Questions about setup
I have worked in IT for several years and programming or anything related to
this is not exactly one of my strengths. I need help creating a vesamenu..
Im trying to setup up so I can access my Acronis backup and disaster
recovery 10 server, knoppix live cd, hardware diagnostics - pcdoctor and
maybe a hiren type boot cd. I checked the Linux irc channel which I guess is
now abandoned. If anyone
