shaping passive ftp traffic
...ux firewall/router with 2 nics. 1 nic (eth1) is connected to a 3mbit/384Kbit cable connection and the other (eth0) a switch. Behind it i have a suse linux box and a windows box. On the suse box i run proftpd. I need to shape my passive ftp send speed to 34KBytes because if it is maxed out at 45K it slows down all surfing on the entire network. I have tried running wondershaper-htb on the ipcop firewall and it limits my upload speed, but it still seems to slow down everything else a little bit. I notice a slow www experience however my ping times are good. Is there a simple way to...

M-Box benchmark
...nce is very different to the one in that benchmark. I will appreciate similar links from those of you who had benchmarked Dovecot against other IMAP servers. I'm conscious that my personal experience is far to be a objetive comparison. I switched from UW-Imap/Mbox to Dovecot/Maildir a box with 45k local users, 3.5MB/s sustained IMAP/POP traffic in work hours. The main performance gain is from mbox -> maildir switching. Anyway the users (and myself) "perceive" a good performance with the new setup. Regards, maykel [1] http://www.isode.com/whitepapers/mbox-benchmark.html

going past restrictions on number of elements
Hello R experts, I'm trying to test R in a shared memory environment in which addressable memory is aggregrated to about 600G. However, I get an error of 'too many elements' specified when I try creating a 45K x 100K matrix. I tried running R with a --max-nsize=50000000000 option, but got the same message. Is there a way to run create such large matrices? thanks, Paul Rodriguez

...rate limiting. (Note that, unlike in the case of spam and SMTP, allowing a couple POP/IMAP connection attempts until the limit strikes is unlikely to become visible to the legit userbase.) Which is not to say that such a feature should not be implemented - after all, Jim said that he compiled the 45k list *himself*, so it would be a *locally administered* DNSBL for him. Rsync / SSH / Cygwin .. permission problems..
I am attempting to use rsync to "mirror" data between several windows 2000 and windows XP systems. I am a UNIX person by nature, so decided the easiest way to go about doing this would be to use Cygwin with cron and ssh running as services, then run the rsync connection nightly through cron. Cygwin is installed on both systems and works perfectly. OpenSSH is installed and running,

Just to dispel any hopes -- RC3 really low bitrate
...but very muffled (high frequency basically gone). Occasionally it will "open up" a little and get some high-end, and stay like that for maybe a second (definately more than one block), then close up again. I might be able to live with this, it sort of sounds like Real at 16k or so. ... 45k - now most of the time it sounds like 35k when it opened up, and like 35k there are times when it'll pull in another block of higher frequencies. The average quality level seems about consistant with what I'd expect a stream coming down from my 28.8 modem (~24k) to sound like, if the rough...

[lld] Has anybody ever run into the Solaris linker before?
...it yet. Has anybody stared at this code? How does it compare architecturally with LLD? If you're looking through for the first time, please post any findings/insights in this thread so others can follow along. (for the record, `illumos-gate/usr/src/cmd/sgs/libld/common % wc -l *.c` gives about 45k lines of code, so LLD/ELF is still quite a bit slimmer, though giving solaris libld a factor of 2 handicap due to using C vs C++ brings them basically to parity) There even seems to be a simple "libelf": http://src.illumos. org/source/xref/illumos-gate/usr/src/cmd/sgs/libelf/common/ M...

Please forgive this off-topic post... I've been on this list since 2005 (over 45k messages in my archive) and this is obviously really not something I normally do. If you have a minute and are feeling generous, please visit http://bailout.chipin.com/ and consider helping me out. eigen anomaly
...opsis: a certain matrix causes eigen(symmetric=TRUE) to produce NaN's in some of the returned eigenvectors. This happens using SuSe 8.2 Professional and the precompiled R rpm (happens in both 1.8.1 and 1.7.1). I don't see it under Windows. To reproduce the bug: The matrix (75 by 75, about 45K) is in http://www.burns-stat.com/pages/Flotsam/eigenbugmatrix.RData Load that into R. sum(is.na(eigen(eigenbugmatrix, symmetric=TRUE)$vectors)) is non-zero (600 in my experience) when the bug is exhibited and is zero when the bug is not. It is quite sensitive to the numbers. The bug is still t...

help with outbound shaping on 1 nic
...he following: I have 3 computers. A linux router and 2 clients. On one of the clients I run linux and I have a ftp server using passive mode. I want to run traffic shaping on the linux client. It has 1 nic. I want to shape the outbound ftp traffic to 40 KBytes because my cable connection is 45K. I have tried to mark traffic with iptables mangle rules but I have had no success. Is there a simpler way to do this? I want to preserve 100mbit traffic between my 2 clients! And I want to ensure that www and email traffic are top priority. Is it as simple as making a root class limited to...
