Advanced Format Technology
While researching another issue unrelated to Syslinux, I found some
mildly disturbing news that affects Syslinux. As HPA stated back on
2009-06-04, hard drive manufacturers are pushing towards a 4096B
(4kiB; 4k) native sector size. They're calling it "Advanced Format
Technology". It appears that WD (Western Digital; WDC) is the first
with some products being released back in December and that Seagate
just recently "jumped on the bandwagon".
Seeing as HPA's mention...

smartctl of usb backup drive
...goplug with the Redsleeve 7
distro), I have a usb attached backup drive (what other type of drives
can you have on a pogoplug other than usb? :) ).
I had reformated the partition as ext4:

So I tried smartctl:
#smartctl -a /dev/sdb

how can I tell what's on the MBR of /dev/sda?
Subject says it.
I would like to find out if I have anything written on the MBR of a disk
in my system /dev/sda, or any other device.
If there is something there, is it readable, or recognizable to humans?
thanks,

btrfs balancing start - and stop?
Hi,
My company is testing btrfs (kernel 2.6.38) on a slave MySQL database
server with a 195Gb filesystem (of which about 123Gb is used). So far,
we''re quite impressed with the performance. Our database loads are high,
and if filesystem performance wasn''t good, MySQL replication wouldn''t
be able to keep up and the slave latency would begin to climb. This
though, is

1: Is this system booting UEFI or BIOS?
2: Is the disk partitioned with MBR or GPT?
3: Is /boot on its own partition?
3TB drives are larger than MBR and BIOS properly support, so they're
only really expected to work on a system partitioned with

[RFC] Vector Predication
...other function signatures. Of course, there can be different vector function ABIs for different targets. Intel
compiler cost model uses vector function VF as part of loop vectorization VF determination. So, it’s tightly coupled.
A hypothetical vector target may vectorize such a vector function for 4096b vector, with an explicit VF parameter 20 also passed to it, to execute only the lower
20-elements parts of the whole thing.
I think this scenario answers Philip’s question on why separate mask and VF parameters and why VF can’t be conservatively deduced from the mask/mask compute.
