Why are LAN ports not standard on UPSs these days?
...ed to be concerned about reliable power again so I have spent a bit of time looking at options and I don't understand why most of the UPS offerings available do not come standard with a LAN port? Why is this? Do people have suggestions about my options? I have two main machines - say 250-400W total and a few small devices inc a Billion router and some USB devices. It would be nice to have at say 5-10 minutes battery backup before sending shutdown messages to the Linux machines. Quiet 24 port POE gig switch
A little off topic but.... I need to put a 24 port Gig PoE switch into a small office - no computer room / rack etc. All CAT5 terminates near the owners desk (smart huh?). I want to put a PoE switch in place, with 24 ports and Gig speed. Everyone I've researched so far is LOUD... Anyone know of a quiet one? Thanks -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment

(Fwd) Re: Slightly OT: Generators & UPS
Hi, I'm the original poster on the subject. Thanks for all the replies. A few more points. The generator outputs 7kw @ 220V. The total PC's supplied is about 9. I estimate power consumption to be 9 x 300w=2700w 4 halogens @ 400w each=1600w 10 Compact Flourescents @ 11w =110w Therefore total power=4410w Which leaves me with spare capacity of about 2590w (in theory). I think its the halogen lamps that is helping "smooth" out the power. Previously, when I ran the generator, I did not have the halogen lamps on,...

Old HP Xeon server blade with only SCSI HDD ports & CentOS
Hi there. I got myself a pair of old Intel Xeon blades, which I plan to repurpose with CentOS. The model is : HP bl20p-g3 server blade Manual http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12322_ca/12322_ca.pdf Now, the main problem with this hardware is that LVD UW SCSI HDDs are hard to find and hella expensive if you find em (and of reduced capacity). Any of you know: 1. If there's any

Why are LAN ports not standard on UPSs these days?
...t be depending on any other systems for their services. A LAN card with SNMP doesn't really enforce this hierarchy, but then again, there are probably some high-availability cases where SNMP makes more sense. > Do people have suggestions about my options? I have two main machines - say 250-400W total and a few small devices inc a Billion router and some USB devices. Be sure to factor your network infrastructure into that power estimate - you will want the network links between NUT master and slave systems to be on battery power as well, or else the master will resort to guessing the sta...

Smart1500lcdt will not connect with usbhid-ups KSTAR BM3150 1500VA "Line Interactive" High Frequency UPS
...x OUTLETS which I believe is good value. I would believe the the EATON ?5E 1500VA/900W UPS With 3 x OUTLETS would work just as well. The 1500VA also uses the same batteries as the 2000VA so I would believe it would run its raited load longer than 2000VA. My eight drive RAID driver uses less that 400W so I would expect that the device would easily run two small servers, and one monitor and/or ADSL modem for about 30 minutes, plenty of time to allow? a 5 minute wait time before a shutdown process. I like to wait 5 minutes to give people an opportunity to restore power if the issue was a tripped...

Smart1500lcdt will not connect with usbhid-ups
I talked to Tripp Lite Technical support. Their policy is that they only support Fedora and SUSE. There is no one there that could help with Ubuntu or NUT issues. The only answer they could give me was to port the rpm files to Ubuntu and use them. This is way beyond my experience level. I will go to the local electronics store and buy a cheap USB 2 hub to see if that works. I will post the

Slightly OT: Generators & UPS
Hi, Can anyone shed some light on this: My PC's are on a separate power circuit. Each PC has its own UPS. I have an old Honda generator. When the power goes out, I fire up the generator. However, the UPS's still run on battery. If I connect the PC directly to the socket and bypass the UPS, the PC works. I was told by a UPS supplier, that the power output from the generator was

TDM400P Problems
Hi, I have just started to setup and configure my asterisk box and am having trouble with it. I have a dlink nic in the box as well as the digium card. When the nic is in there by itself it works, but when I put the tdm400p in, there seems to be some sort of conflict with the network card. The tdm appears as another type of network card, which I don't think it should, should it? It shows

...132 controller, and the 7th disk on a $65 4-port PCI-X SiI3124 controller that I scavenged from another server (it''s in a PCI slot, what a waste for a PCI-X card...). The rest is also dirty cheap: $65 Asus M2A-VM motherboard, $60 dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4000+, with 1GB of DDR2 800, and a 400W PSU. When testing the read throughput of individual disks with dd (roughly 81 to 97 MB/s at the beginning of the platter -- I don''t know why it varies so much between different units of the same model, additional seeks caused by reallocated sectors perhaps) I found out that an importan...

5.1-R-p2 crashes on SMP with AMI RAID and Intel 1000/Pro
Dear Sirs. It seems to me a never ending story. We run a box with a TYAN Thunder 2500 Dual SMP mainboard, 2GB ECC Tyan certified memory, AMI Enterprise 1600 RAID adapter and additional Intel 1000/Pro server type (64 bit) GBit LAN NIC. With FreeBSD 4.8 this was stable, but to achive this state was really hard! It is a story similar to that what happend when we changed towards FreeBSD
