What makes excel file opening so slow??
...re-install the FC3
with Samba 3.0.14a on another computer for replacement soon), I still
have one more question on Excel files. I found that Excel file opening
is extremely slow (especially on slow connections, i.e. VPN). The case
is really bad, it takes around 2 mins to open a excel file of around
400k. Actually we got both side having 4M/4M DSL line. One side is
Hong Kong, and the other side is China. However if we build a VPN
inside Hong Kong, it takes 10~20 seconds to open a 400k excel file.
However if I just copy a 400k file, neither of them take such a long
time. Both situation can finish th...

a very simple problem, but unknown solution
...many
simultaneous file creation requests from one PC.
All the files are written to a samba mounted directory, and the directory
*file* itself does get somewhat large. The directory name is MM-DD-YY so it
changes every 24 hours.
Here's the problem .... as the directory gets larger and at about 400K, the
file creation slows down, and it slows down, it appears because samba is
looping calling getdents() hundreds of times without doing anything else as
if it needs to read every entry in the directory for every file 'open'
requested.
AND each PC seems to be bound to exactly one Samba s...

NIC interrupts and packets per second ratio, how to calculate? There must be some way...
...gh number of packets per second on its NIC. THe only way I can achieve
this without guesses is If iam able to understand or test what the
number of interrupts available per core and how to translate that to PPS
capabilities.
So far ive been testing an Core I5 CPU and was able to achieve up to
400k packets (small syn packets) in a single core (2.8Ghz i think..)
untill the point where 100% was reported to serve as hardware
interrupts, yet what is the math behind this?
In any case, i find this rather low and confused as I know for a fact
that small home routers even on gigabit have specs th...

grub.conf
Thanks for reply.
I replaced break=y with init=/bin/sh.
In that case case system just hangs with the following message.
"Freeing unused kernel memory : 400k freed".
Thanks!!

Using the same pktgen script (i.e with clone=0) I see that a
veth-->bridge-->veth configuration gives about 400K PPS forwarding
performance where macvlan-->veth-->macvlan gives 680K PPS (again, I made
sure that the bridge has applied learning before I start the test).
Basically, both the bridge and macvlan use hash on the destination mac

extract integers from string
I have a vector with a long list of sentences that contain integers. I
would like to extract the integers in a manner such that they are
separate and manipulatable. for example:
x[i] <- "sally has 20 dollars in her pocket and 3 marbles"
x[i+1] <- "30 days ago john had a 400k house"
all sentences are different and contain a mixture of both integers and
characters.
i would like to get a conditional matrix such that:
y[i,j] <- 20 y[i,j+1] <- 3
y[i+1,j] <- 30 y[i+1,j+1] <- 400
based on some criteria (i.e. order, string length, keyword, etc...)

non-standard boot floppys
...find no
place where this information is used ...
If it's not used by now, I would like to see support for that. I could
try to build it in myself, but I'm very closed about who is touching my
source code, so you may not like it ... But using this could get
floppy-based solutions another 400K so, if you don't want to do it
yourself AND consider including my changes, I could try to fit that in.
I saw that you already read in the boot record. Getting "sector per
track" and "tracks per side" for that should be easy ...

samba speeds: update
OK just out of curiosity I used the smbclient prog from FreeBSD to check
upload and download speeds... downloading from win to unix gets ~3000k/sec
and uploading from unix to win gets ~4000k/sec so the only problem is
uploading from win to unix where it's like ~300-~400k/sec...
It must be how xp sends its files not a prob with the server... does
anyone know where this would be set and what it may be???
thanks again,
Tsidorus
