GlusterFS healing questions
Hi,
We ran a test on GlusterFS 3.12.1 with erasurecoded volumes 8+2 with 10
bricks (default config,tested with 100gb, 200gb, 400gb bricksizes,10gbit
nics)
1.
Tests show that healing takes about double the time on healing 200gb vs
100, and abit under the double on 400gb vs 200gb bricksizes. Is this
expected behaviour? In light of this would make 6,4 tb bricksizes use ~ 377
hours to heal.

Looking for a good disk exerciser
I recently added a Seagate 400Gb SATA drive to my system, and it has been
behaving strangely since I put it in. for one thing, the BIOS S.M.A.R.T.
came up with a warning the last time I booted with it enabled, saying that I
should backup my data and replace the disk (!).
I still have not made any irreversible data transfers to t...

erase disk
Hi.
I have a CentOS server (a Dell 860) with two drives in it.
One is running CentOS 6.4 which I want to keep & the bigger 400GB drive
has Debian 7 on it which I want to erase & use for backups.
Which is the best way to go about achieving my intended goal? The Debian
drive is not mounted when Centos is booted.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers,

rsync of big image files from virtual hosts takes lot of time
Hi,
i'd like to rsync some image files from virtual hosts each night. The image files are between 50GB and 400GB big.
I thought rsync would be the appropriate solution because it just transfers the differences, not the whole file.
But nevertheless rsync takes hours.
The images aren't much modified over the day, i would expect just some tens of megabyte needed to be transfered.
I have the following comman...

Did anybody do a dovecot update on centos 5.x?
Hi,
dose anybody did a dovecot update from the original 1.0.7 to e.g. 1.1 or
1.2 from atrpms repository?
We dont have any special settings; Each user one mbox mailbox. About 500

Any suggestions and comments are welcome.

Samba limitations
My company is seriously considering moving our existing NetWare 4.11
file servers to Samba Linux servers (Red Hat 8). Our current servers
hold (on average) 400GB of data each (some much more) on various volumes
(our largest volume at this time is 400GB). Most of this space is used
by multimedia files which are >1GB up to 4GB (yes, for a single file).
We have about 200 users who have access to various directories across
all of the servers, although we ho...

cluster.min-free-disk not working
...is favouring the MOST full brick to write to. This is not a good thing
when the most full brick has less than 200GB free and I need to write a
huge file to it.
I've set cluster.min-free-disk on the volume, and it doesn't seem to have
an effect. At all. I've tried setting it to 25%, and 400GB. When I run
tests from an NFS client, they get written to the most full brick. There
is less than 10% free on that brick so it should be ignore with the
defaults anyway.
Any ideas?

Tape operation
...ppend" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore
a backup, we can choose what date available in that particular tape.
I have zero experience with tape on Linux. I've been googling around and it
seems that the backup operation is very different.
For example:
- The tape is 400GB (LTO-3)
- The data is only 10GB
Some of the articles I read imply that 1 tape contains 1 backup-file only.
CMIIW. This is certainly not very efficient. The commands used are: mt,
either tar, cpio.
My question is:
1. How do I use that one tape of 400GB to store 39 archives of backup into it

Looking for server recommendations

- dual PS, hotswap a plus
- USB2.0 port(s) (*)
To give you an idea of where I'm starting to look, take a gander at this
page:
http://www.serversdirect.com/system_dept.asp?dept_id=SD-043
Obviously we'd like to keep the price low, but realize that a major cost
will be the 400GB drives. We may only start with 4 or 5 of them and add
more as time goes (LVM), depends on how the costs break down. We've even
looked at a Dell 2850 as an option, fyi.
Anyone have some good ideas? My main concern is choosing a motherboard
with a disk controller that's robust, tried and tru...

Samba / Windows workgroup master browser problem
I admit theres a LOT about the windows networking I dont understand -
and even though this may NOT be a SAMBA issue per se, I thought I'd post
it here.
Have a 400gb samba server thats been working well (am upgrading to
current patches today, btw).
I've got 3 Win2k workstations, on two subnets, that have drives mapped,
and connect every morning on startup just fine. All the machines belong
to one workgroup.
The way I have in the past added machines was...

Rsync stops randomly (using vanished files bash script)
Hey,
I've been trying to transfer about 90GB from one Server to another using
rsync. But rsync stops randomly. I use the bash script provided in a bug
report, to block errors about vanished files!
Here is how I start rsync:

Load balancing...
...is
getting considerable traffic? In the past I only have experience with BigIP
where you have a load balancing device that keeps track and send traffic to
the best server possible at the time. This was a proprietary system that I
think was something Dell rebranded.
Right now, the whole site is is 400gb of video, HTML5, Apache, PHP, MySQL,
runs on a single box with 16gb of RAM and mirrored /var/www/html (2x1tb raid
level drives). I have a Comcast 50/10 connection, 5 statics and I am seeing
about 125 unique visitors a day. The site runs fine, but in anticipation of
more traffic as well as a learnin...

Raid / dual Opteron power issues
Hi All,
I've just started caring for a dual Opteron machine. It has a 3Ware
9500S-12 RAID controller, a Tyan S2882G3NR motherboard, 10 IBM 400GB
disk drives, and a 650 watt power supply.
It has been behaving itself quite nicely until recently. The poor
behavior started when I upgraded the OS from CentOS 4.1 (32 bit) to
Centos 4.1 (x86_64). When running in uniprocessor mode, the system
appears to work properly. However, when running...

If you are doing a local copy then just use cp as it is much faster at that.
