clara - memory limit
...-read.dbf(file="fnorsel_4px.dbf")
my.clara.7k<-clara(mydata,k=7)
>Error: cannot allocate vector of size 465108 Kb
The dataset contains >3,000,000 rows and 15 columns. I'm using a windows
computer with 1.5G RAM; I also tried changing the memory limit to the maximum
possible (4000M)
Is there a way to calculate clara clusters from such large datasets?
Thanks a lot.

a question about swap space, memory and read.table()
...ory) 384Mb. When I allocate a large matrix, it firstly
uses up RAM, then use swap space. In windows' task manager, the usage
of memory could exceed my physic RAM's size.
The other machine is a remote server. Windows XP, R 1.9.1 Physical RAM 2GB.
Swap space 4GB. I use "R --max-mem-size=4000M" to start R. However
when I allocate a large matrix or data frame, it uses up all RAM then
exits with a error message" cannot allocate vector of size 7812 Kb ".
The Swap space is not used at all !
What's more, I found that the read.table() function is really a waste of memory.

SOLUTION: Slow file transfers from Samba server
Here was the solution to my slow file-transfer problem from Scott. I
coincidentally did have a HP Procurve 4000m (what are the chances), ended up
swapping out the switch and presto. I can't believe I didn't try it
before. Thanks again Scott.
Here are some links I researched previous to this though that may help you.

Slow copying over samba server to/from Windows XP
...lient side, and that problem was not observable.
The copy start at 50mbit/sec and somehow it's stops and just waiting waiting about 10-20 sec, then it go ahead.., it's very pesky.
I was searching at google for the problem, and try several resolution, but they don't work. (Change our HP 4000M switch to another one, Downloaded MS patch, Setting the network card parameters at the registry, trying to set the NIC speed manualy, trying to change the NIC, modifed the SO_SNDBUF size at samba, and much more.. )
Which I see in iptraf, is the copy starts at 50000kbit/sec and after a while it...

Windows R 1.8.0 hangs when Mem Usage >1.8GB
I have a loop that increases the size of an object after each iteration. When the Windows Task Manager shows "Mem Usage" about 1.8GB, the Rgui.exe process no longer responds.
I use:
"C:\Program Files\R\rw1080\bin\Rgui.exe" --max-mem-size=4000M --min-vsize=10M --max-vsize=3000M --min-nsize=500k --max-nsize=1000M
I have a dual Xeon 2.8GHz processor box with 4GB of memory and "R version 1.8.0, 2003-10-08".
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dick

[Bridge] Bridge MAC address
Sorry, if this question has been answered before, but I could not find
out with a brief look.
How can I set the MAC address for a bridge? The MAC address given for
the bridge device seems to be the one it sends network packets with if
the bridge device has an IP address set. Apparently the bridge starts
with a zero MAC address and when the first interface is attached to
it, it takes its MAC

7.0-Release and 3ware 9550SXU w/BBU - horrible write performance
Hi,
I've got a new server with a 3ware 9550SXU with the
Battery. I am using FreeBSD 7.0-Release (tried both
4BSD and ULE) using AMD64 and the 3ware performance
for writes is just plain horrible. Something is
obviously wrong but I'm not sure what.
I've got a 4 disk RAID 10 array.
According to 3dm2 the cache is on. I even tried
setting The StorSave preference to
