net ads join fails 3/4's of the time
I just wanted to share my frustrations with trying to use samba to join
linux machines to our AD (so I could use pam_winbind primarily). I'm
using Red Hat Enterprise 4 boxes, with samba-3.0.14a,
krb5-libs-1.3.4-12, kernel-2.6.9-5.0.5.EL (I tried Fedora Core 3 too,
with similar results). I (pre)added machines to the AD using the Active
Directory Users and Computers tool.
I initially had clock skew problems (yielding kerberos errors), but I
now have synchroni...

Understanding Samba 4's features and goals
Hi folks,
I'm the co-author of "Windows and Linux Integration," a recent
Sybex/Wiley title. So I'm very much interested in what's coming
next in the Samba world. And I've been watching the Samba 4
'technology releases" with interest.
One nifty feature that I like a lot: the old options that specified
many confusing types of server behavior have been replaced with a
"role" option. That makes total sense to me.
Here's what doesn't make sense to me, though: this opt...

[PATCH] Fix mkinitrd detection of LVM root on RHEL 4
RHEL 4's mkinitrd will fail to recognise that root is on LVM when running on a
recent kernel/udev due to changes in naming. This patch detects LVM root for
RHEL 4, and uses a dirty hack to frig mkinitrd if required.

Safari 4 Plays Theora/Vorbis
FYI: After hearing about Safari 4's support for HTML 5, I played
around with it and found that it will play Theora/Vorbis in the
browser using the VIDEO tag.
(If the QuickTime component is installed.)

Can't change password change dates with PDBEDIT
I'm setting up a Samba server using CentOS 4's (RedHat Enterprise Linux)
standard version (v.3.0101411). I want to be able to force users to
change their password upon first logging in and to have to change them
after a certain period of time (per user, not system-wide).
The problem is that the pdbedit commands don't seem to be regi...

number detection problem.
Hello,
We're using asterisk with a z-plex 10 and a Zap tormentia card at a non-profit home for the aged.
Sometimes when we dial out, our numbers are misintepreted with one number being detected twice. For instance 337-4411 becomes 337-7441 7's 4's and 0's seem to be particularly prone to this issue.
Any ideas? I've tried turning down rxgain and txgain.

Creating a frequency table for binomial varaible
...ke frequency table( that means I need to tally how many 0's
, 1's 2's....... 5's)
I know that the simple R function table() will do this, but I am afraid
that some times I may get zero frequency for some particular values (for
example in the above there are 5-0's 10-1's , 14-2's, 10-3's , 11-4's but no
any 5's )
So I want to make by frequecy table ( as a date frame) as
value freq
0 5
1 10
2 14
3 10
4 11
5 0
How can I create such a table?
Forgive me if this is a very basic question. I am new t...

Samba 4.1.8 Importing automountmap ldif entries from existing OpenLDAP setup or ?
So, I have a test domain set up with rfc2307 = yes .
Now I'm trying to figure out if a) my nfs automount data came over from OpenLDAP, and b) if not, how to get it into samba 4's ldap, or something else??? Do I need to rethink my approach?
Mount locations are pretty consistent based on primary group/userid
Needs to work on Linux.
Existing entries look like this...

Samba 3.0.33 joining Samba 4 domain
Hello,
I am testing Samba 4's active directory with the latest master copy.
I have joined a Windows 7 desktop to it fine without any issues. From Windows 7, I can browse to the AD controller IP address in Windows and see the standard Active Directory shares.
I attempted to join Samba 3.0.33 (CentOS 5.8) to Samba 4'...

DHCP & Dynamic DNS
I have followed the Wiki here http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_AD_DC_HOWTO
On setting up Samba $ as a DC in it's own real. So far so good and all looks to be working well.
What this document seems to be missing is a "how to" on DHCP dynamically updating Samba 4's
Integrated DNS server (which is the one I am using).
Does anyone know of a how to on this?
PS:
So far, very well done to the Samba 4 team, looks very good.
Kindest regards,
Benedict White

Problems with R under Win 3.1
I've downloaded rsept31.zip, unzipped it and have been able
to run it under OS/2. When I start it I get an error (error
no. 6) but the package seems to run just fine using OS/2
Warp 4's Win-OS/2 version of Windows 3.1. (I always have to
tell it wherre the rprofile is. Is that normal?)
I've tried to run the same Windows 3.1 version of R on a
computer running Windows 3.1 (actually Windows for
Workgrouops). But everytime I try to run it I get a message
saying that the...

Samba 3 to Samba 4 migration
I have a production Samba 3 installation with an LDAP backend. CentOS 5.8,
OpenLDAP. Works well.
I have a new Samba 4 installation with a different domain name on a new
CentOS 6.2 system, using Samba4.0.0beta and bind 9.9. This system does not
have Samba 3 or OpenLDAP installed. This installation passes all of the
initial kerberos, ldap and dns tests. The name was changed because this
system is on the same net...

Acceptable version mismatch between syslinux 6.0N's MBR/ldlinux.sys and *.c32?
Hi there,
first, thanks a lot for syslinux!
I'm aware that one can't mix syslinux 4's MBR + ldlinux.sys with
syslinux 6's COM32R modules. Fair enough. Now, I need to know how
strong this "versions *must* match" requirement is when dealing with
different versions of syslinux 6.x. E.g.
* MBR and ldlinux.sys installed by syslinux 6.03-pre1
* all *.c32 modules i...

Win'95 printer lock-ups & filters
...int job samba & lpd don't like and it will completely
hose the printer, to the point where I have to clear the queue and
sometimes physically reset the print server attached to the printer. I
can't even telnet to the print server when this happens. Most of the
printers are HP LaserJet 4's & 6's connected via external or internal
JetDirect print servers. What is unclear to me is why this is happening.
I suspect Win '95 is the culprit and if this is just SOP while running
networked printers I'll live with it, but I want to make sure I haven't
missed anything...

Problems building Samba 4.x on Solaris 9 and 10 - libintl (again)
Greetings,
Trying to get current, but having problems building samba 4.x on Solaris

I've Been trying to build either samba 4.0.19 or 4.1.9 on Sparc boxes
running both Solaris 9 and Solaris 10. I am using gcc 3.4.6 from the
old www.sunfreeware.com site. I also have libintl 3.4.0 from them as well.
My machines are domain member servers in an Active Dire...

I have enabled "client NTLMv2 auth = yes" in smb.conf

(change user and MYDOM to be my user and my domain)

We need to change our AD domain
...d be an absolute pain in the rear
end to redo from scratch.
Machine accounts will be dealt with by the required unjoin/rejoin
process. If a forced password change is the only thing users complain
about I'll consider the migration a great success.
Getting from a Samba 3 NT domain to a Samba 4 AD domain was relatively
simple and painless. Surely there's a way to go from one Samba 4 AD
domain to another. Sure it would be nice to have a domain rename
supported natively but of all the things that still need to be done in
Samba 4's implementation of AD I don't believe it shou...
