Join Tables
I just have a few questions about join tables. From my understanding the following applies (correct me if I''m wrong): 1.Join tables are always named with the names of the two associated tables, in alphabetical order, separated by an underscore. 2.The foreign key fields are named with the name of the table they are referencing, with _id appended. 3.The foreign key is referencing a

just don''t ''get'' "has one" and "belongs to one"
Well, I understand what they do and how, I just don''t get why! It seems to me that any time you would have this relationship between two tables...they should be one table! Agile Rails book gives what seems to me to be a lame example for this. They use the example of an "invoice" and an "order". An invoice belongs to an order and an order has one invoice. Seems

How to implement status codes in DB and Rails
This is more of a design issue I''m wrestling with, and was wondering what other people are doing. I have a products table with status values of In Stock, Out of Stork or Discontinued. This is unlikely to change any time soon. Approach A, is to have thses actual values in the status column, at least the meaning is very apparent, yet querying for products with a specific status could

select lists - DB best practice
Hey guys, I''m putting together an app with user profiles, and each user will be able to update a section called ''quick stats''. This will involve lots of drop down lists with options like ''hair colour'', ''height'', ''Location'' etc etc. The way I m thinking about doing it is to create new table for each group of options

design recommendations for authenticating users with lots of different attributes..?
I''ve been struggling a bit trying to figure out the best way to design/implement a system with authentication/authorization, and was hoping some of you may be able to offer some advice.. At the moment, I have a system with 4 different types of users - clients, administrators, sales_reps, and public_users. I''m using "Authorizing Users with Roles" from the Rails Recipes

database design question: building features
I am trying to decide between two different database architectures for an application to manage properties. For capturing the property features, I have two options: a single model/table with all the features as fields, or a set of joined models - property, feature, feature data. (see attached ERD diagram) OPTION A Properties name address has_pool has_doorman has_etc. (a bunch of values, not all
