Low-memory Centos5?
Good morning,
I've inherited an old laptop from my wife that I'd like to
use when I travel (it's fairly small with a 12" screen). The
bad part is that it is maxed out on memory with 384MB.
Has anyone played with using Centos5 on systems with
little memory? Ideally, I don't need too much - Firefox,
Openoffice, a little Perl/Python/C here and there. I was
thinking about using either XFCE or Icewm as the window
manager. I'd also like it to work with the existing wireless
card (...

Sound Quality
...can hear the caller perfectly), but the person
calling experiences very choppy sound. There are no breaks in the sound, but
it is very choppy, to the point where a conversation is not possible.
I installed Asterisk from CVS earlier this week. It is running on RedHat 9,
with a XP1600+ Processor, 384MB RAM. The ISDN card is an 'Elsa Microlink
ISDN PCI'.
I've searched through the archives but cannot find a resolution to the
problem. I've tried changing the compression used but this has little or no
effect. Has anyone got any hints or tips?
Thanks,
Nathan.

R, but I would like to get some feedback on the equipment I should get for
this. At this moment, I have a Pentium 3 laptop running windows 2000 with

Thanks for some ideas, Ruud

a question about swap space, memory and read.table()
Hi all
Two computers:
one is my desktop PC, windows2000, R 1.9.1. Physical RAM 256MB, Swap
(Virtual memory) 384Mb. When I allocate a large matrix, it firstly
uses up RAM, then use swap space. In windows' task manager, the usage
of memory could exceed my physic RAM's size.
The other machine is a remote server. Windows XP, R 1.9.1 Physical RAM 2GB.
Swap space 4GB. I use "R --max-mem-size=4000M"...

memory.size ?
I am using Version 1.3.1 (2001-08-31) on a PC running Win98 and have
384MB RAM
The error that I get is
Reached total allocation of 256Mb: see help(memory.size)
According to the help I should issue a Command-line flag
`--max-mem-size'
Where do I do this and what is the statement ?
Thanks in advance

Removing/disabling console-kit-daemon
...that this
process was taking up over 560M of virt memory. On googling, it seems
to be a known issue and doesn't seem to be needed except for graphical
desktop. Although virt memory isn't actual memory usage, the daemon is
still taking up almost 4MB of limited memory, which on a VM with only
384MB feels relatively significant to me.
Earlier in May, there was also a mailing list thread that indicates
removing console-kit-daemon requires getting rid of hal as well.
Is it safe to remove both console-kit and hal for headless
console-only web application VMs that also needs mdadm?

R-1.6.0 to 1.6.1 diff?
...ich is unfortunately
unavailable on Windows (not using cygwin).
I have a related question. I've been building R on Windows myself
lately because I found that is necessary if I want to build R packages.
Is that true? However, it takes quite a long time to build
(on a Duron 1GHz laptop with 384MB memory running WinXP Home) and I
couldn't do much else at the same time. So I was hoping by applying the
patch file, I won't have to rebuild everything from scratch again.
After all, not many files have been changed. Has anyone have experience
with that?
Cheers,
Michael

Issue installing Centos server on Vmware Fusion/Server
Hi All,
I've had issues over the last few days trying to create a Centos server
image . I've tried with Vmware fusion and Vmware server and it skips
directly to the default desktop install and doesn't give me the option to
run the linux server. I am not sure if you've seen this earlier. I've tried
with Centos 5.8 and 6.0 but the installer seems to work in that manner .

Centos 6 installation memory requirements
...mory (vidoe steals some from the 512Mb
base) and FC14 switches to text install and does not install any GUI,
leaving the boot in test mode.
I recall a message earlier that 6 is based off of 14, but not the final
Anaconda, thus my question.
It would be NICE if the install can work with at least 384Mb of memory,
as this is the recommended minimum for FC14 so I would think it is the
miniumum for RHEL/Centos 6.
I am seeing FC leave more older hardware behind and with its short
cycles and 'currentness' of apps for RHEL 6, I am looking at moving some
of my desktops back from FC to Cento...

First time Dovecot user, really impressed so far. What is best IMAP enabled webmail package to go with Dovecot?

T-Bird is very quick, on the order of 5 seconds. It would probably be quicker
if Dovecot threaded the search to use both CPUs, but pegging just the one CPU
the search is still very darn quick. And this is on a dual P2-550 class machine
with only 384MB RAM and a single 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive.
I'd like to install a webmail package on the same host. I used Squirrelmail for

interface. I'm also not impressed by the fact that I regularly receive spam

Fixing txg commit frequency
Hi All,
I''d like to ask about whether there is a method to enforce a certain txg
commit frequency on ZFS. I''m doing a large amount of video streaming
from a storage pool while also slowly continuously writing a constant
volume of data to it (using a normal file descriptor, *not* in O_SYNC).
When reading volume goes over a certain threshold (and average pool load
over ~50%), ZFS

Asterisk and VMWare

There is any experience using Asterisk with VMWare?
I think about installing a virtual linux box over VMWare and then Asterisk
over it.

cupsaddsmb problem
Hi all,
I have a problem with adding point and print to a print server. The server
details are as follows:
700MHz Celeron + 384MB RAM
Mandriva LE2005 (Mandrake 10.2)
Samba 3.0.13-2mdk
CUPS 1.1.23
cups drivers 10.2-0.11
gimpprint-cups 2-1.1.23-11
foomatic 3.0.2-1
The server is bound to an NT4 based domain (to be replaced with Linux/Samba in
the summer) and winbind works fine with wbinfo -u and -g returning a full
list of us...
