General Server Hardware Question
Hey List, How do people measure how many listeners they can have on a single NIC card? A 1Gig Ethernet NIC card maybe able in terms of bandwidth to serve 31,250 listeners at 32Kbps (not including overheads etc, just a flat calculation) but there is no way the NIC card its self could handle 31k concurrent connections to 31k different IPs on 31K ports? (Obviously the OS comes into play here a bit also, but forget that for a moment I am just focussing on the NIC card its self at the minute). So how do people calculate how many servers or NIC cards per server they will need to handle this m...

zfs send/receive : panic and reboot
<copied from opensolaris-dicuss as this probably belongs here.> I kept on trying to migrate my pool with children (see previous threads) and had the (bad) idea to try the -d option on the receive part. The system reboots immediately. Here is the log in /var/adm/messages Feb 8 16:07:09 amber unix: [ID 836849 kern.notice] Feb 8 16:07:09 amber ^Mpanic[cpu1]/thread=ffffff014ba86e40: Feb 8

Huge difference in reporting disk usage via du and zfs list. Fragmentation?
Do we have enormous fragmentation here on our X4500 with Solaris 10, ZFS Version 10? What except zfs send/receive can be done to free the fragmented space? One ZFS was used for some month to store some large disk images (each 50GByte large) which are copied there with rsync. This ZFS then reports 6.39TByte usage with zfs list and only 2TByte usage with du. The other ZFS was used for similar

Performance mdbox vs mbox
If I do the same test[1] with mbox I can store around 31k messages and mdbox 16k messages. I noticed also that cpu and disk utilization with mdbox was not very high, while disk utilization on mbox was much higher. That makes me wonder if I can tune mdbox to have better performance? 31K failed stat64's when viewing a simple (no db) rhtml page?
I''m trying to help the sys admins of my server figure out what is up with our Rails installation (debian sarge - completely up to date). Hitting a simple page yields 31,000 failed stat64''s and takes anywhere from 8 - 44 seconds. They #! for ruby is correct everywhere, but it''s like it can''t find Rails. These are box stock standard installs. Here''s

strange (to me) p-value distribution
I'm working with a genomic data-set with ~31k end-points and have performed an F-test across 5 groups for each end-point. The QA measurments on the individual micro-arrays all look good. One of the first things I do in my work-flow is take a look at the p-valued distribution. it is my understanding that, if the findings are due to chance alone...

Rsync / SSH / Cygwin .. permission problems..
I am attempting to use rsync to "mirror" data between several windows 2000 and windows XP systems. I am a UNIX person by nature, so decided the easiest way to go about doing this would be to use Cygwin with cron and ssh running as services, then run the rsync connection nightly through cron. Cygwin is installed on both systems and works perfectly. OpenSSH is installed and running,

weird bug with Seagate 3TB USB3 drive
Banging my head against a Seagate 3TB USB3 drive. Its marketing name is: Seagate Expansion 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STAY3000102 format(1M) shows it identify itself as: Seagate-External-SG11-2.73TB Under both Solaris 10 and Solaris 11x, I receive the evil message: | I/O request is not aligned with 4096 disk sector size. | It is handled through Read Modify Write but the performance

10.0-BETA4 (upgraded from 9.2-RELEASE) zpool upgrade -> boot failure
Hi, Is there anything known about ZFS under 10.0-BETA4 when FreeBSD was upgraded from 9.2-RELEASE? I have two servers, with very different hardware (on is with soft raid and the other have not) and after a zpool upgrade, no way to get the server booting. Do I miss something when upgrading? I cannot get the error message for the moment. I reinstalled the raid server under Linux and the other

Rebuild of kernel 2.6.9-67.0.20.EL failure
Hello list. I'm trying to rebuild the 2.6.9.67.0.20.EL kernel, but it fails even without modifications. How did I try it? Created a (non-root) build environment (not a mock ) Installed the kernel.scr.rpm and did a rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec 2> prep-err.log | tee prep-out.log The build failed at the end: Processing files: kernel-xenU-devel-2.6.9-67.0.20.EL Checking
