socket blocking with readBin
R Gurus / Ninjas / Wizards: On both R 2.12 (Windows 7) and R 2.13 (OS X 10.5) I have tried the following: 1. In one instance of R open a socket via: s1 <- socketConnection(server=TRUE, open="a+b", port=31415, blocking=FALSE); 2. And in another instance I do the following: s2 <- socketConnection(open="a+b", port=31415, blocking=FALSE); And so I have two processes communicating with sockets. Now, say on s1, I use socketSelect(list(s1),,0) # Session 1 and it returns FALSE,...

I'm running CentOS 4.3 on Intel. I don't have any tape device on my system for backup, but I have an entire disk (/dev/sdb) for backup ... my question is: How can I backup ALL my filesystems to some place of my backup hdd (dev/sdb) using dump/restore? I don't want to use tar. Regards Israel

Constraints when sampling from a distribution
Dear R-helpers, My question is related to how to impose constraints when when sampling from a distribution. For example, suppose I'm sampling a vector from a multivariate normal distribution vbeta <- 100*diag(2) mbeta <- c(1,1) ans <- beta <- c(rmvnorm(1,mbeta,vbeta)) ans will thus be a vector with two elements. My question is how do I place a restriction on one of the

ZFS slows down over a couple of days
Hi all, I have exchanged my Dell R610 in favor of a Sun Fire 4170 M2 which has 32 GB RAM installed. I am running Sol11Expr on this host and I use it to primarily serve Netatalk AFP shares. From day one, I have noticed that the amount of free RAM decereased and along with that decrease the overall performance of ZFS decreased as well. Now, since I am still quite a Solaris newbie, I seem to

vpn-zone wide open
Hello! I am using shorewall shorewall-2.0.11-1 on fedora core2 (iptables-1.2.9-95.7). My box has 2 physical nic´s plus one virt. ipsec interface for a freeswan-vpn connection. A few days ago, portsentry spit out a lot of connections from windows clients (port 135, 445). Ooops. I review my shorewall settings but could not find a mistake. So I took a win-client and established a second
