6 disk raidz2 or 3 stripe 2 way mirror
I''m playing around with ZFS and want to figure out the best use of my 6x 300GB SATA drives. The purpose of the drives is to store all of my data at home (video, photos, music, etc). I''m debating between: 6x 300GB disks in a single raidz2 pool --or-- 2x (3x 300GB disks in a pool) mirrored I''ve read up a lot on ZFS, but I can''t really figure out...

Problem sharing a directory which contains other mountpoints
Hi, Here is my problem : On a server we have a directory, /data, shared with Samba. In this directory, we have two mountpoints : mp300 which contains a 300GB filesystem, and mp500 which contains 500GB filesystem. So we have : |----data |-------mp300 => 300GB |-------mp500 => 500GB and /data is shared wich Samba. On Windows, if we try to put many files, a example 30GB, in /data/mp300 (or /data/mp500), Windows says there...

Zil on multiple usb keys
This might be a stupid question, but here goes... Would adding, say, 4 4 or 8gb usb keys as a zil make enough of a difference for writes on an iscsi shared vol? I am finding reads are not too bad (40is mb/s over gige on 2 500gb drives stripped) but writes top out at about 10 and drop a lot lower... If I where to add a couple usb keys for zil, would it make a difference? Thanks. Sent from a

Performance patch
...uilding the file list. Syncing 1.2 million files over 100MB LAN is taking around 8-9 hours with no differences. Possibly that's normal. However at the same time it's causing a disk IO bottleneck on the server and slowing down everything else. The server (dual Xeon 3.2, 2GB RAM, RAID5 on 3 x 300GB 10k SCSI) is a reasonably powerful as is the client (Dual P3 1GHz, 2GB RAM + RAID0 on 2 x 300GB IDE). I'm using a client software to pull from the server as an on site backup. It's a bit hard to tell since the code has changed a bit since then (probably for the better though). CH -----...

Support for add disk SCSI
Dear Sirs. I have a ML370 G4 server with 2 disk SCSI Ultra 320 of 300 GB in RAID-1 through a controller and operating system CentOS 4.7. My question: CentOS 4.7 could support the expansion of capacity by adding 6 disks SCSI Ultra 320 of 300GB in Raid-1? 700GB gone?
I have a 1.5TB disk that has several partitions. One of them is 900GB. Now I can only see 300GB. Where is the rest? Is there a command I can do to reach the rest of the data? Will scrub help? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

CentOS newbie just saying hello
Hi folks, Just a quick hello having installed CentOS on my first box - an Acer Altos G310 (P4 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM with 70GB + 300GB storage. The 300GB unit is a SATA disk which I hope to software (hardware!?) mirror - if I'm in for any major fun mirroring a SATA drive do let me know now - I think hardware mirroring is not an option (yet!?) but I haven't checked this out completely. This isn't my first *nix/linux i...

EXT3 performance on Large (multi-TeraByte) RAID
Has anyone experienced a significant degradation in ext3 performance when using it on a Multi-TeraByte RAID? As part of an experimental setup, I hooked up three 300GB drives and made an EXT3 RAID5 out of them, using the entire space one each drive, and started throwing a large number of files in the size-range 3KB to 50 KB. Then, I deleted the raid, and created a new one, but this time, I used only 3 Gigs from each drive (a very small RAID compared to the earlie...

Ext3 filesystem aborting journal at random times (Maxtor 300GB disk)
...graded to FC2 my server randomly decides that it can no longer access the disk and "aborts" the ext3 journal leaving it read-only as expected. I've seen the same errors on other mail list, explained away as disk or disk cable issues, but in my case all the disks are all brand new 300GB Maxtors. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it because the current kernel can't handle a 288GB partition? BTW the server is completely up to date as per the up2date command including the kernel (2.6.6-1.435.2.3). Start of fsck: ================================================= [root at serv...

Weird issue - STATUS_DISK_FULL
Hi All, I've a share on a btrfs volume that is reporting that there isn't enough disk space for a backup. Which is odd as the file is about 300GB in size and df -h reports 5TB free. Any ideas? testparm -s Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf Processing section "[BACKUP00]" Loaded services file OK. Scrubbing only checks used data?
...ahead, and rewrite each block of each device of the zpool". Whereas "resilvering" means "Make sure, that all used blocks of the pool are in good health". Please correct me, if I am wrong. To test, I created a zpool named tank, assigning it a whole 300GB physical SATA disc as backend. I observed, that scrubbing my 300GB tank takes virtually no time, when tank is empty. Using space of tank (say, by a 20 GB copy of /dev/zero) causes scrubbing to take much longer. This is clearly not, what I want (now). I want zfs to check the whole device for err...

Semi-OT: Backing up maildir
.../home | gzip | ssh other.server (cd /backups && tar xfp -).. I have tried gzipping the stream on the source side, gzipping on the destination, and running without gzip, all three take an amazingly long time to complete (> 14 hours). Ours is a modest server with about 1300 users, about 300GB of mail total. The whole thing sits on hardware RAID-10, so I'm primarily guarding against a MAJOR hardware failure, a config blunder, or a hacker wiping out files. How do you guys back up your maildir? I've considered exporing the maildir with NFS and backing it up from another server.....

Has anyone used a Dell with a PERC H310?
I''m trying to configure a DELL R720 (not a pleasant experience) which has an H710p card fitted. The H710p definitely doesn''t support JBOD, but the H310 looks like it might (the data sheet mentions non-RAID). Has anyone used one with ZFS? Thanks, -- Ian.

LLVM building problem
Dear all, I'm using a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu 18.04 at VIrtualBox and I'm trying to build the LLVM project from https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project.git. This VM has 6 cores (from an intel core i-7 8th gen), 11GB of RAM and 300GB of storage (from a 1TB HDD) at a laptop, this is the model: MSI GS63 Stealth 8RE. Then, I'm doing exactly that this tutorial says to build LLVM: https://llvm.org/docs/GettingStarted.html 1) Clone the project from git: "git clone https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project.git". 2) Use cmak...

Archiving mail
...ome read-only media but mount that media in the users mail-dirs. That way I will have less to backup after I backup that old mail and store it safely away. I can't convince my users to really clean up their mailboxes, so I backup more than 100GB mail while the total backup is a bit more than 300GB. Writing this I realise I could give each user a folder oldmail and symlink that to a read-only oldmail folder. Would this work ? I will have to find out how my backup-software can ignore the oldmail-folder. Thanks for any suggestions, Koenraad Lelong

Intel 320 as ZIL?
Are any of you using the Intel 320 as ZIL? It''s MLC based, but I understand its wear and performance characteristics can be bumped up significantly by increasing the overprovisioning to 20% (dropping usable capacity to 80%). Anyone have experience with this? Ray

...0' to do this, and would like to use 'shutdown -F -r 'at a chosen time to force fsck on reboot, and I'd then like fsck to do things in parallel. What are the resources (memory etc) required for parallel fsck'ing? Can I reasonably expect to be able to fsck say, 50 300GB filesystems in parallel, or should I group them into smaller groups? How small? Thanks, Terry. --
