Zone Scalability
I''m happily running two four zone/four nic shorewall firewall configuratoins. Great software, works as expected everytime! We are conteplating a larger and more complex firewall configuration that may include as many as twelve zones with trying to cram as many as 8+ interfaces into a single machine. Are there any draw backs to this amount of zones and interfaces into a single

samba on solaris 11 can not longer join Windows AD domain
...evant stuff. I think I hit paste twice. The problem with showing just the config file is that options not explicitly set may have different defaults depending on version. I have attached part of cat smb.conf below. /etc/hosts does not include the AD Domain controllers. /etc/resolv.conf shows 2ndary DNS servers, which in turn sync data from the AD Domain controllers. I don't think this is a DNS issue since "net join" and "net ads join" are locating the AD domain controllers. /etc/krb5/krb5.conf is set up for the MYDOMAIN realm. I can use the ldapclient and kinit t...

server max protocol appropriate values
Hello, My DC smb.conf currently has the following set server max protocol = NT1 server min protocol = CORE client max protocol = NT1 client min protocol = CORE Is it safe to change both the client and server max to = SMB3? What about on member servers? Should I be concerned with anything breaking? I'm using Windows 7 clients to authenticate against Ubuntu

server max protocol appropriate values
I have several Samba 3.6.24 domain controllers/file servers . Server1 - Solaris 10, Samba 3.6.24, max protocol NT1. This is the main file server. Server2 - Solaris 10, Samba 3.6.24, max protocol SMB2. 2ndary file server, not as heavily used as as server1. Server3 - Solaris 11, Samba 3.6.24, max protocol SMB2 . This was set up to replace Server 1. I also have a a Citrix XenApp 6.5 server running on Windows 2008 R2 with RDP/Terminal Services role On do of them, I changed the server max protoc...

Samba+LDAP + Primary GIDs
...ing the user's gid - which as I understand it is the Primary Group. However, authentication against any secondary group is denied. I've checked the samba logs, and as far as I can tell, uid's and gid's (primary) are getting passed and authenticated - but no mention of checking the 2ndary groups. I've checked my ldif's - the groups exist, the users exists as memberids, but it looks like samba is only checking the gid? Is this something that anybody else has seen? Thanks, Kris

Is Amanda "vaulting" what I need for archiving data?
...We want to periodically take the data and archive it to tape and then remove it from disk and store the tape in our archival facility. We'd need a record of what is on each tape of course. But this would not be the same scenario as in the link above because it would not be taking data from 2ndary to tertiary storage. It would essentially be taken from primary to tertiary directly. i.e. directly from disk to tape. But not in an automated fashion like typical nightly dumps. On request, we'd take the scientist's data and copy it over to our server that has the tape unit, then dump...

Backup Redux
...release and it looks like we need to keep at least 1 of them, but this is clearly not a long term viable solution. In the end I want to get our central IT group to take over our backups if possible (we are a bit of an island outside of central IT), but as I pursue that path I also want to pursue a 2ndary path assuming they will say "no". I am familiar with BackupPC and will look at the other recommendations above. I think that Bacula and Amanda are sort of the drop-in replacements for what we have now so I'll look at them most closely. But if I do have to carry forward with our ow...

FreeNAS/Samba Group Permissions with LDAP
I'm not sure if this is an LDAP issue, a Samba issue, a BSD issue or a FreeNAS issue... I'm working at migrating a large block of file shares from an aging CentOS/Samba 3.0.9 server to a FreeNAS (8.0.2) server. (The FreeNAS box is running FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p3 and Samba 3.5.11.) I will eventually be migrating the entire domain and user base off of that server, but for the time being, I

interdomain trusts / wbinfo and listent_recv: returned no users
As per earlier post, I was having problems getting trusts setup between my Samba domain (3.0.x PDC, 3.4.x BDC on Solaris 10) and two Active Directory domains (each in a separate forest.) One domain is a test Win 2003 PDC in native Win 2003 mode, the other is a Win 2008 system also in native Win 2003 mode. To summarize some of the progess- things work better if the Samba 3.4 is the PDC,

samba on solaris 11 can not longer join Windows AD domain
I would like to move my Samba file server (Samba 4.4.14 on Solaris 11) from a classic domain into an Active Directory domain. The active directory domain has one Win 2008 directory server / domain controller, and one Win 2012 R2 DS. E-mail, among other things, depends on a Microsoft AD backend. A few months ago I was able to join a test server to the AD domain. Today I tried joining a
