Question from XM Radio
Thanks for the reply. We are currently using AMBE (4Kbps) for our Traffic/Weather Channels. If you have ever had a chance to hear the service, you will know that AMBE does not do us well.
I understand that 2Kbps is low quality, but any poorer than AMBE?
If can get a decent quality for other low bandwidth talk channels, such as about 10-16Kbps and have it sound rather clean, then I would be gaining a bit of growth in the areas I'm seeking.
None of this would be Music, understand. Music needs it'...

Opus vs Speex NB
Hi,
I noticed that speex.org has a banner that mentions that Opus is better
than Speex in all aspects. The supported bitrate range for Speex seems to
be as low as 2kbps though but Opus can only go as low as 6kbps. Is this one
aspect where Speex is still preferred? (I understand that it's not a very
common scenario though).
Thanks,
Manpreet.

Port Speex to SH3 platform
...application scenario is for
intercom kind of an Application.
I want to know if the CPU power on the SH3 based SBC running at ~ 100 MHz
shall be sufficient for running speex(The compression and decompression
interfaces shall be used simultaneously by the application).
Further, I intend to use the 2kbps rate with the speex. My second question
is that will that rate be sufficient to achieve a reasonable quality of
output for an intercom kind of an application.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Ajay.

Question from XM Radio
...velopment email address, but I don't have any others to use, maybe you can help.
I'm an engineer at XM Satellite Radio in Washington, DC. I'm scouting for other low bandwidth algorithms for some voice content. Speex looks pretty interesting. My goal is to find a promising codec for 2Kbps.
I see the download links on the pages offer various software, but the one link for a DECODER for COOLEDIT and WINDOWS media player is dead.
I have installed the DBpowerAMP converter and have some files converted, but I cannot play the SPX files in Windows Media Player.
Any guidance?

Hi!
Is it possible to encode at a rate of 2Kbps? Because the best performance I achieved is 2.4 kbps..
thanks

Yes but I need to encode at 2Kbps.. are there other free codecs expecially projected for very-low but rate?

cbq.init
...if there is many conf files?
I read about htb.init problem here:
"<snip>
LEAF=sfq
RULE=192.168.1.[1..6]
The problem is when user start to download with Flashget,MassDownloader
(with 10 threads) he kills the internet connection (240Kbit) without
overlimiting his 80Kbit. Other users get 1-2kbps, witch is extremely
unpleasant." And the answer: "You can try the esfq qdisc. You can create the
different queues based on ip-addresses and/or ports and this for source
and/or destination."
I have cbq.init and LEAF=default (tbf). Can Flashget & others do me the
above thing? J...

streaming silence to Winamp
Hi,
I have just integrated libshout2 and libvorbisenc into mserv, my music
server (www.mserv.org).
It all works well. Thanks for a great product.
The problem I have is that when there is a pause between songs of around 10
seconds, Winamp (2.91) decides (due to the 64kbps dropping to a 2kbps stream
I guess), that it needs to re-buffer. It fails miserably and generally
dumps the connection, or at the very least a 10 second pause turns in to a
20 second pause (10 seconds re-buffering and then the 10 second pause I
wanted in the first place).
I'm not sure where the problem lies exac...

Question from XM Radio
...doing the job we had expected.
It's the long standing wish that everyone wants... More for less. We
are just seeking a bit of magic that just may not be there. Ideally
finding a codec that can perform tollerably/intelligibly at 2-4Kbps.
And still perform quite well for complex speech at 10-12kbps.
Just keeping my eyes (ears) out for something that I have never
considered before.
I really appreaciate the time you've taken to reply, Thanks.

I would like to know how do i reduce the noise in the output and improve the sound clarity.
3. My requirement is 2kbps, how extent this low-bit rate will effect the sound clarity and how can i improve the sound clarity at lower bit rates.

Speex: Open-source, patent-free speech coding
Hi,
We would like to announce the first release of the Speex project. Speex
(http://speex.sourceforge.net) is an open-source (LGPL), patent-free
compression format allowing an alternative to expensive proprietary
codecs. Unlike Ogg Vorbis which compresses general audio, Speex is
designed especially for speech. For that reason, Speex is meant to be a
complement to Vorbis. Since it is specialized
