What kind of performance can I expect on this setup...
Running Samba 2.2.8a as a PDC, which will service about 40 people.(grow to
about 60-70 by end of the year)
They will also be accessing shares on the server from a program.
Server is:
Xeon 2.8ghz
2gigs of RAM
3 320 SCSI 36 gig drives: setup in RAID 5 with 70 gigs of room
Running on RH 7.3
Swap is 2048 (Was highest I could set it for 7.3)
Anyone wanna take a gander and tell me what to expect? Any problems I may
run into? What they would change, update etc.
Thank you.

2gig limit
...nk bs=1k
it eventually fails at the 2gig mark. If I run it on the server side, while
running 'ls -l' on the client side, the file size is reported correctly up
to 2 gigs. Ex:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jenkins jenkins 1988903936 Mar 15 19:57 test.junk
As the 'dd' on the server side passes 2gigs, the filesize reported by 'ls
-l' on the client side jumps up a tad:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jenkins jenkins 18446744071976267776 Mar 15 20:00 test.junk
Any idea what is causing this? I've tried searching around on google, and it
seems this was a problem back in 2000-2002, but was fixed in...

Quota over SMBLDAP
Hello Admins,
I am implementing samba over LDAP which is working find with centralized
login. Now looking for implementing quota per user over /home partition.
Users are around 500. And I want to give all of them 2Gigs space each. I
have tried configuring smb.conf as -
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = yes
writable = yes
valid users = SMBLDAP\%S
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
vfs objects = default_quota

Wine and Counter Strike Source Decreasing Frames Per Second
...ke source and wine. I run at about 40fps for the first five minutes.. then with every new round, my fps decreases by about 20%... so by round 5 I'm down to 9 fps.
I've tested this with both wine and cedega and get the same results. I'm running Fedora Core 8 on a core 2 duo processor w/ 2gigs of ram and 256MB video card. I've tried switching window managers, turning off compositing, and setting registry settings suggested in the wine forums website for cstrike source.
I've ran a vmstat and my idle cpu when the fps drops is still around 35%, and I am not swapping to disk.
Is an...

Guild Wars
...eem to get Guild Wars to run at all. When I launch it I I get an error "Guild Wars has encountered an unrecoverable graphics driver error and must terminate". This is a Guild Wars message and not a Wine message.
So I'll cover the basics. My system is a P4 3.2 Ghz with an AGP bus, and 2gigs of ram. I'm currently using an ATI based Sapphire 3850 AGP card 512m, and running Ubuntu (8.04), with Wine version 1.0-rc3. I have tried older versions of Wine but no change. (1.0-rc2, 9.59, and 9.61)
Using the 8.5 ATI linux drivers, I do have 3d acceleration. Compiz is working good, along wit...

problem with 2.4.7pre4
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(139)
Also, on 2.4.6 I was getting this:
access_log
write failed on access_log : Success
unexpected EOF in read_timeout
THis is about an 800meg file I'm trying to copy.
Thanks

Also be warned that temmporary files in DOS prompts (under windows 9x at
least) seem to have a size limit around the 2gig mark. I could never stream
more than 2gigs of capture data into a pipe on my win9x box (I have never
encountered this behaviour using W2K on NTFS.)

CentOS Folding@home team breaks through
Congratulations to all members of the team for contributing towards breaking
through the 2,000 place barrier. In the overall team rankings we are now in
position 1885! Considering how 'young' the team is in terms of how long its
been going thats a stupendous achievement! Well done all!
From now on we can watch our teams ranking on

a question about swap space, memory and read.table()
Hi all
Two computers:
one is my desktop PC, windows2000, R 1.9.1. Physical RAM 256MB, Swap
(Virtual memory) 384Mb. When I allocate a large matrix, it firstly
uses up RAM, then use swap space. In windows' task manager, the usage
of memory could exceed my physic RAM's size.
The other machine is a remote server. Windows XP, R 1.9.1 Physical RAM 2GB.
Swap space 4GB. I use "R

Swap Considerations
I am considering installing CentOS 4.4, and am interested in
how best to set up. I have been using FC2 and helping administer
a Debian machine for a few years, but do not consider myself a
Linux guru.
My current set up uses a /swap partition which is 2x my memory
size
mem = 256 MB
$ sudo /sbin/fdisk -l
/dev/hda6 76506 77545 524128+ 82 Linux swap

Xen 3.1 + CentOS 5 + HP ProLiant G5 = DomU packet drops
