Replacing failed software RAID drive
...all I will admit to being spoiled by my MegaRAID SCSI RAID controllers. When a drive fails on one of them I just replace the drive and carry on with out having to do anything else. I now find myself in the situation where I have a failed drive on a non-MegaRAID controller, specifically an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller. The system is an Acer G700 with 8 internal hot-swappable SCSI drives arranged in two banks of 4 drives. Each bank is connected to a separate channel on the 29160 controller. When I installed CentOS 4 I enable software mirroring between the two banks so that I ended up with 4 pairs...

Overland Arcvault 12 and sequential/random settings
...n issue with CentOS/Fedora RPMs, or the version of MTX? I'm going to try a simple install of Ubuntu next and see if there is any difference. Is this a bug with the firmware, or with my setup? I have rebooted the tape drive and machine several times. I have the drive connected to an Adaptec 29160. I have another identical drive on another system, with a library firmware of d21h, tape firmware 04.04, and that works perfectly with mtx, though it is connected to a different SCSI card. Thanks for any help/insights. Scott

Updating kernel driver module questions
I am running CentOS 4.7, presently on an older box (PIII slot 1 processor @ 500mhz with 384meg of RAM, using SCSI disks with an AHA-2940 host controller). I have built a new box: AMH Semporon 2.<mumble> GHZ, 2gig of RAM. I put in a AHA-29160 host controller (uses same driver as the AHA-2940). The motherboard is an ASROCK thing with nVideo's chipset: nv's SATA controller and nv's integrated network (forcedeth). I just did some tests with live CD and installer CDs for CentOS 4 and 5. It looks like the stock CentOS 4 kernel...

sg device
What is the "sg" device? The reason I ask, is that I have a file server running CentOS 4.2 on a Dell Precision 1650. Disks are attached via QLogic FC. I backup to a Qualstar TLS-4222 tape changer, with AIT-2 tapes, which is connected over an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI. The software I'm using is Legato Networker version 7.1.2. I'm backing up a bit under 1 TB a month with this. Quite frequently these days (meaning once a month or two), the Networker software loses the ability to control the tape changer. Mount, unmount commands just...

[Q] Do you trust fsck?
Box with Redhat 7.1 and kernel 2.4.20 has a hardware RAID (about 750 gigs data) attached via an Adaptec 29160 LP card... I began seeing numerous SCSI errors in my logs for our external hardware RAID and input/output errors on test attempts to copy files via cp. Rebooted and immediately saw the errors as the disk was initially accessed by the Adaptec driver. The RAID controller did not report any prob...

Cannot boot 6.1-PRERELEASE in SMP mode
...P with the second processor installed. It behaves exactly as it did with a single processor and ACPI enabled - i.e. it stops at the 'Waiting for SCSI devices to settle" point and does not get beyond this. I have two SCSI controllers installed - a Compaq 5304 RAID controller and an Adaptec 29160. The system boots from the Adaptec. I do have ATAPICAM compiled in to the kernel, but I get the same result with generic SMP. I have upgraded the machine to 6.1-PRERELEASE and I still get the same problem. Does anybody have any ideas about setting about debugging this ? The motherboard has been fl...
