R/C++/memory leaks

I am concerned about the following. In square brackets you see R's
total virtual memory use (VIRT in `top`):
1) Load library and data [178MB] (if I run gc(), then [122MB])
2) Just before .C [223MB]
3) Just before freeing memory [325MB]
4) Just after freeing memory [288MB]
5) After running gc() [230MB]
So although the freeMemory function works (frees 37MB), R ends up
using 100MB more after the function call than before it. ls() only
returns the data object so no new objects have been added to the
workspace.

Samba versus NFS/ftp
I ran some tests today, ftp'ing a 288MB file to the server was completed in
29.3 seconds, ~10 MB/sec.
This is 3 times faster than Samba! which needed 82 seconds using drag/drop
on W2K. NFS needed 39 seconds.
I have read the 'performance tuning' documents and have done all/most of
the changes they recommend but nothing appears...

While installing Hmisc...
Dear R-Gurus:
This afternoon I was installing the "Hmisc" package.
I use R in Linux (Fedora Core 1 (yarrow)) on a Compaq presario with 128 MB RAM laptop.
Opening an R session as a root user (superuser), I issued
install.packages("Hmisc")
and waited.
R downloaded the package, installation was going on, and on the standard output I could see that a list of
