Creating vegetation distance groups from one column
Hi R listers,
I am trying to group distances of nests to the vegetation into classes that
are define by (0-5m, 6-10m, 11-15m, 16-20m, 21-25m, 26-30m, 31-35m, 36-40m,
41-45m, 46-50m, 51-55m, 56-60m). Each row is a nest and all the distances to
the vegetation is in a column.
In plyr, I have tried - below script but I think I am going about this the
wrong way and am not successful.

Memory footprint
...ded environment with
serious memory constraints. I would need to know how small a memory
footprint I can hope to get. I run ligthtpd with only one dispatch and
I did already remove actionmailer and actionwebservice which I do not
need. Currently top shows a memory footprint of 720K for lighttpd and
25M for the dispatch.fcgi process.
The smallest the footprint, the better so any suggestion on how to
reduce it is very well accepted.
Thank you in advance,
Emanuele.

Spatstat, markcorr, max. radius limited??
...I want to apply the mark correlation function but for radii up to 75 meters (in 75 individual 1m steps). Unfortunately, "There is a sensible default for the values of the argument r at which the mark correlation function kf (r) should be evaluated", so that I do not get results for r > 25m. Can I change something in the function to get the required values as written above?
Thanks,

extremely slow NFS performance under 6.x [SOLVED]
...k with
had been playing with it recently, with some real problems we'd been
having, and this time, with a year or so's more stuff to google, and newer
documentation, found the problem.
What we'd been seeing: cd to an NFS-mounted directory, and from an
NFS-mounted directory, tar -xzvf a 25M or so tar.gz, which unpacks to
about 105M. Under CentOS 5, on a local drive, seconds; doing the above,
about 35 seconds. Mount options included sync. Under 6.x, from the
beginning, it was 6.5 to 7 *minutes*.
The result was that we'd been keeping our home directory servers on 5.

[feature request?]: Show progress only for big files
...t;250 MB for a
local copy. Printing the progress of files which are transfered within
just one or two seconds is not really necessary. Is this possible? If
not, the best I can imagine, would be a switch, maybe called
"--progress-threshold=x", where 'x' is the threshold level (e.g. 25m for
25 MB...).
Thanks in advance!

request: add TCP buffer options to rsync CLI?
...rd rsync on a tuned tcp stack, we see about 700k/s. I started
playing with the --sockopts and have increased the performance to
1.4M/s which is better, but still way off the pace.
There are similar patches for ssh at
http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/
which work wonders (up to 25M/s where previously we were at 700k/s).
I would love to see similar performance gains from rsync as I've see
from the tuned ssh...

Persistant Z drive in XP
Hello. New to SAMBA.(2.2.8 on RH9) Mixed environment of 98 & (trying)
XP. My "net use s: /home" command works wonderfully for XP and 98. But
XP throws in an "extra" "more home-than-home" directory - namely
\username\.win_profile on the Z drive. I've tried disconnecting it with:
net use Z: /delete, but XP claims to have a process running on it (even

apache 2 and php 5.2
...php 4 on centos 5.5 and then a few repos including
the remi repo to upgrade to php5, which seems to upgrade/work without any
issues.
However when I make a change to the /etc/php.ini file it doesn't look like
apache is seeing it, for example if I change the post_max_size and
upload_max_file to 25M each apache still sees the default 2M. I also removed
the /etc/php.ini file and apache is able to start with no problems and it
will still see the default 2M.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me why apache is not taking the settings
from the /etc/php.ini file and it works without that file....

shorewall suddenly dropping all from outside
Hi List,
I read this list for nearly two years and learnt a lot, but now i have
a very strange problem I can''t solve..
I have a firewall machine running Debian, which connects a small
office to the internet via a DSL-line (with pppoe) and which is
running Shorewall. It allows all outbound traffic and accepts pptp,
openvpn and ssh-connections (on a non-standard port) from the
internet.

Rsync and differential Backups
...t on the backup server which NFS-mounts the source file
system as read-only (NFS read operations are low overhead). You may
also use SSH.
The backup server has XFS filesystems with the inode64 mount option (no
inode problems :-). Our backup filesystems varies from 1-40 TB in size
with 100k to 25M inodes. For very large source filesystems you may want
to use 10 Gbit/s links to speed up the backups.
The only issue I see is with source filesystems containing tens of
millions of files, since new inodes have to be allocated on the backup
server to "snapshot" a filesystem. The time...

[ubuntu] WoW frame raiting question
Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to linux and I read in many places that NVIDIA specially for ubuntu was the way to go as far as a video card goes.
I currently have a ATI Radeon HD 6950 1Gb. and I have WoW installed and I'm playing it yet the frame drops in 5m and I havent try in 25m yet. So I went a bought the EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti ftw edition 448 Cores and due to a lack of drivers (non that I could fine to be fully compatible) the rates went down like a block.
So my question is, is there a way to fix this or is there a listing of video cards that I could use similar in spe...
