IBM X3200
Hi ppl . I am getting a IBM x3200.. This machine can only support up to 4 x 250GB SATA. I need to have a usable space of 500GB and mirror it to other 500GB. IBM proposed me to get 2 RAID cards. Do you guys think i can do raid 0 on the first 2 x 250GB HDD and raid 0 on the second 2 x 250GB hdd, both on hardware raid and then during the installation of centos 5, i raid 1 on bot...

msdosfs vs 250Gb hard disk
I am attempting to utilise a 250Gb Maxtor external Firewire drive. To obtain maximum portability I would prefer to format it as FAT32 (it comes formatted that way) - that way Windows, Linux and FreeBSD machines can access it. Unfortunately FreeBSD doesn't grok really large FAT32 partitions :( When I attempt to mount it, I get -...

4.2 install w/250GB raid arrays won't boot
hi! raid 1 arrays: I already have 2 systems running this same raid1 config. 1 sys has 2 120 gb 1 sys has 1 120gb and 1 200gb but matching the raid partitions this system here that is giving me fits right now has 1 250gb and 1 200gb. I tried it w/a new 250 gb for the 2nd drive but the same results. Will not boot. in druid, when I am config. the raid arrays, I always create the boot partitions in hda1 and hdc1 and make them primary...maybe I am doing wrong by giving them 200mb instead of 100mb but I do it in the...

Hello all, I have a machine with 2 SATA 250GB disks which I want to upgrade to 1TB SATAs This is the partition structure on both disks: Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/...

RAID 0 across SSD and HDD
...;'ve been unable to find anything definitive about what happens if I use RAID0 to join an SSD and HDD together with respect to performance (latency, throughput). The future is obvious (hot data tracking, using most appropriate device for the data, data migration). In my specific case I have a 250GB SSD and a 500GB HDD, and about 250GB of files (constantly growing). One message I saw said that new blocks are allocated on the device with the most free space which implies the SSD would be virtually unused in my case, except for metadata which would only be used half the time. At the moment I h...

upgrading storage on hardware RAID 10 possible?
Hi all, Can anyone please tell me, from experience, if it's possible to upgrade the hard drives in a RAID 10 system from 250GB HDD's to 500GB / 750GB HDD's, while the server is running? The server runs CentOS 5.5 x64. Our hardware vendors simply always say no, so we never actually tried doing this, and when a client needed an upgrade like this we had to build a new server with the same spec and larger hard drives...

ZFS Roadmap - thoughts on expanding raidz / restriping / defrag
...'t guarantee how much space will be added. That will have to be calculated based on how much data you already have. ie: If you have a simple raid-z of five 500GB drives, you would expect adding another drive to add 500GB of space. However, if your pool is half full, you can only make use of 250GB of space, the other 250GB is going to be wasted. What I would propose to solve this is to implement a defrag / restripe utility as part of the raid-z upgrade process, making it a three step process: - New drive added to raid-z pool - Defrag tool begins restriping and defragmenting old data -...

Upgrading drives in raid 1
I think I have solved my issue and would like some input from anyone who has done this for pitfalls, errors, or if I am just wrong. Centos 5.x, software raid, 250gb drives. 2 drives in mirror, one spare. All same size. 2 devices in the mirror, one boot (about 100MB), one that fills the rest of disk and contains LVM partitions. I was thinking of taking out the spare and adding a 500gb drive. I would run this " sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdc &quot...

booting from a +2TB disk
I have been trying to install CentOS 4.1 on a new server today. The installation went fine but the system doesn't boot. It doesn't even get to the Grub screen. The system has a 3ware 9500 series controller and 12 250GB SATA disks which are configured for RAID5 with one hot spare. I searched on the web and noticed that this is a Grub (and Lilo) limitation. Is there any way around it other than setting up a smaller RAID device? -akop

Strangely slow disk
...on my CentOS-5.7 server, which has become incredibly slow for some operations, eg rsync, BackupPC archive, e2fsck, although it seems to work fine for ordinary file operations, and "smartctl -a /dev/sdb" does not report any errors. For example, running "e2fsck -p /dev/sdb5" on a 250GB partition on this disk took over 24 hours to complete, as it did on another partition. I wonder if anyone can offer an explanation, or suggest a remedy? -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College Dubli...

useless tools - tunefs.ocfs2,fsck.ocfs2
...ecc /dev/xxx funefs allocate 9,89 GB of virtual memory and 95% of phisical memory (4GB). After 4 hours process has been killed - because of out of memory. I have to recreate new filesystem and restore data from backup. I try to use tools in version 1.4 and 1.6 (newest) Filesystem is quite small 250GB and less than 10 000 files, exported by aoe. Additionally on the new clean FS - running tunefs.ocfs2 --fs-features=nosparse behave in the same way It seems that the tools are not "perfect" Could anyone confirm? Pawel

DELL SC430 + CentOS 4.0 + SATA HDDs
Dear gurus, Three DELL SC430s were purchased by my company a few months back and I've been told that when they spoke with the DELL representatives, they were informed that these servers were fully RHEL 4.0 compatible. Specs of the servers:- - Pentium 4 - 2.8 GHz - 1 GB RAM - 2x 250GB SATA HDDs I tried installing CentOS 4.0 on it but it doesn't seem to be able to detect any hard disks. Has anyone out there successfully installed CentOS 4.0 on a Dell SC430? Please help. Your guidance is greatly appreciated. TIA, Andrew

mirror writes 10x slower than individual writes
I have an odd setup at present, because I''m testing while still building my machine. It''s an Intel Atom D510 mobo running snv_134 2GB RAM with 2 SATA drives (AHCI): 1: Samsung 250GB old laptop drive 2: WD Green 1.5TB drive (idle3 turned off) Ultimately, it will be a time machine backup for my Mac laptop. So I have installed Netatalk 2.1.1 which is working great. Read performance from the mirror, via gigabit ethernet rocks, easily sustaining 50MB/s off the two drives mirrored...

Best hardware

The controller card I will be using is the SuperMicro SAT2-MV8 133MHz PCI-X card. Will it be the controller card running in a regular PCI slot on the AM...

Best option for my home file server?
I was recently evaluating much the same question but with out only a single pool and sizing my disks equally. I only need about 500GB of usable space and so I was considering the value of 4x 250GB SATA Drives versus 5x 160GB SATA drives. I had intended to use an AMS 5 disk in 3 5.25" bay hot-swap backplane. http://www.american-media.com/product/backplane/sata300/sata300.html I priced Seagate 250GB and 160GB SATA drives at $70 and $54 USD each, respectively. The backplane runs about...
