Median computation
Hi,
I have a 250,000 by 300 matrix. I am trying to calculate the median of
those columns (by row) with column names that are identical. I would like
this to be efficient since apply(x,1,median) where x is created by choosing
only those columns with same column name and looping on this is taking a
really long time....

ZFS handling of many files
Hello,
I have been experimenting with ZFS on a test box, preparing to present it to
management.
One thing I cannot test right now is our real-world application load. We
write to CIFS shares currently in small files.
We write about 250,000 files a day, in various sizes (1KB to 500MB). Some
directories get a lot of individual files (sometimes 50,000 or more) in a
single directory.
We spoke to a Sun storage person, and he said our scenario is unique in our
file count, and we could run into severe performance problems.
Has anyone se...

Random Forest with highly imbalanced data
Hi group,
I am trying to do a RF with approx 250,000
cases. My objective is to determine the risk factors
of a person being readmitted to hospital (response=1)
or else (response=0). Only 10%, or 25,000 cases were
readmitted. I've heard about down-sampling and class
weight approach and am wondering if R can do it. Even
some reference to ar...

Very long delay for first write to big filesystem
...sk is blocked and will hang until the first write begins
again.
The prevailing thought at the time was this was associated with loading
into memory the directory information looking for free space, which I would
believe now.
The filesystem in question is 7.5TB, with about 4TB used. There are over
250,000 files. I also have another system with 1TB total and 400GB used,
with 65,000 files. This system, the smaller one, is beginning to show
delays as well, although only a few seconds.
This problem seems to involve several factors: the total size of the
system; the current "fragmentation"...

[SUGGESSTION 1/1] OCFS2: automatic dlm hash table size
...uggest a automatic resizing the dlm_lock_resource hash table feature. that means it can increase the size of the hash table per the number of dlm_lock_resource objects which are already in the hash table.
the default(smallest) size is 16 in shift bits. when the number of dlm_lock_resource rearches 250,0000, auto-resizing is triggered and the destination size is 17. and when rearches 500,0000, resize to 18, for 1000,0000, resize to 19... though the numbers need to be discussed yet.
with this we can use proper sized memory for runtime usage and keep good enough lookup performance.
if it's go...

SSD over 10gbe not any faster than 10K SAS over GigE
GigE wasn''t giving me the performance I had hoped for so I spring for some 10Gbe cards. So what am I doing wrong.
My setup is a Dell 2950 without a raid controller, just a SAS6 card. The setup is as such

mirror rpool (boot) SAS 10K
raidz SSD 467 GB on 3 Samsung 256 MLC SSD (220MB/s each)
to create the raidz I did a simple zpool create raidz SSD c1xxxxx c1xxxxxx c1xxxxx. I have

Plot survey data
I am trying to make plots that take into account survey weights. This a
survey of the US population. To start with I want to explore the data using pairs,
