Partition large disk
Hi, I have a 24TB RAID6 disk with a GPT partition table on it. I need to partition it into 2 partitions one of 16TB and 1 of 8TB to put ext4 filesystems on both. But I really need to do this remotely. ( if I can get to the site I could use gparted ) Now fdisk doesn't understand GPT partition tables and pat

Disk Layout for New Storage Server
We are implementing a ZFS storage server (NAS) to replace a NetApp box. I have a Sun server with two dual Ultra320 PCIX cards connected to 4 shelves of 12 500GB disks each, yielding a total of 24TB of raw storage. I''m kicking around the different ways to carve this space up, balancing storage space with data integrity. The layout that I have come to think is the best for me is to create a raidz2 pool for each shelf (i.e. 5TB per shelf of usable storage) and stripe across the shelve...

First Time Setting up RAID
...I have read that RAID 5 is the only viable option. It also appears that the amount of storage available on a RAID5 array with N members is N-1/N. I also read that as the number of members increase both latency and the risk of data loss increases. As the amount of disk space we have in this unit (24Tb) is greater than the total storage of all our existing hosts it appears that a RAID5 array of 5 units would leave at least one hot spare in the chassis and two if the OS is put on one disk. Alternatively, the thought comes to mind that we could do a RAID1 with two RAID5 arrays each of which have 3...

ZPool and Filesystem Sizing - Best Practices?
Hello, We have a new Thor here with 24TB of disk in (first of many, hopefully). We are trying to determine the bext practices with respect to file system management and sizing. Previously, we have tried to keep each file system to a max size of 500GB to make sure we could fit it all on a single tape, and to minimise restore times and...

iSCSI offload with Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5709.
Hello all. We recently purchased HP Proliant DL380 G7 server and also a HP Lefthand P4500 G2 24TB iSCSI box. The server itself has Quad Ethernet based on the BCM5709 Chipset from Broadcom (NetXtreme II). My main question is about iSCSI offload mechanism, as iSCSI itself is pretty new to me but I have gotten a good hold on it tho. I have managed to setup and configured our Lefthand box into...

j4200 drive carriers
apparently if you don''t order a J4200 with drives, you just get filler sleds that won''t accept a hard drive. (had to look at a parts breakdown on sunsolve to figure this out -- the docs should simply make this clear.) it looks like the sled that will accept a drive is part #570-1182. anyone know how i could order 12 of these?
