process for petitioning for more flac hardware support
...h if this isn't the case, please correct me). but how would you go about asking say, apple, to add flac support to the ipod? the ipod can already play a number of formats, including wav files & the firmware is upgradeable. there's already a 10gig model and since toshiba announced a 20gig version of the drive the ipod uses, i'd guess there's a 20gig ipod soon for this world--which would be insanely great for a portable flac collection. as flac is free and open source, and there aren't fp issues like with ogg, i'd think flac would be an easy sell to a hardware mfr...

Friendly Reminder (OT)
Today, I had a tragic hard drive crash. I hadn''t updated anything to SVN in two weeks. I''m posting this here as a reminder to my beloved Rails community. Everyone, right now..... make a backup of your rails work. Make sure its on two disks. Many of you already do that automatically, but just make sure its working. Two near-release rails plugins were lost in the tragic crash

creating disk images
I am familiar with using dd to create a disk image. dd if=/dev/hda1 of=myimge.img However, is there a way to capture the entire disk image into a file. I have 3 partitions: hda1 / hda2 swap hda3 /home and mbr How can I wrap them all into 1 image file. Thanks, Jerry

How do we updated to the new .7.1 version.
...instructions I found were for CVS's. And since it's a system that has been running fine I have not wanted to do any updates. But I figured that a new release is better then the .5 I have. (I have some small Zap port problems). Also I would like to change the hardware out from a Intel P4, 20gig PC to a Dell Dual Xeon rack server. Any directions on this will also be helpful! The new PC will be running Either RH 8 or 9 or maybe the new Megis. (Since I am new I do not favor any version of Linux).

Time taken Backup using ZFS Send Receive
I have been using ZFS send and receive for a while and I noticed that when I try to do a send on a zfs file system of about 3 gig plus it took only about 3 minutes max. zfs send application/sample at back > /backup/sample.zfs However when I tried to send a file system that''s about 20 gig, it took almost an hour. I would had expected that since 3 gig took 3 mins, then 20 gig should

rsync not removing files that are out of date
...lly large images (75-500mb) and often put them in temp directories until the product is finished and then remove the old one. The rsync client is not seeing this so on the server I have an empty $home/somepath/temp/ directory and on the backup machine I have a $home/somepath/temp directory that is 20gig. I would rather not exclude the directories if I can help it. Now I have about 700Gig of storage but that will be filled in a week if I don't find a way to automagiclly remove these temp files on the backup server. Here is my command line: #rsync -ahv --ignore-times --size-only linux1::home/...

R getting slower until it breaks...
...hard problem which I'm hopping you'll be able to help me with. I'm using R to create images. That alone is not the problem, the problem is that I'm using R to create 168 000 images... My code (which is given below) use different package (raster and rgdal) to import a image (size 20gig) and divide it into 168 000 pictures that are 100 pixel x 100 pixel. The code works fine for making the images, but if I ask it to run all 168 000, it always breaks around 15 000. It starts with the code being able to make around 2 pictures per second, but then it slows down and after around 20...

Best CentOS to install on *old* laptop?
I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it going again. (Currently it boots either Windows 95 or some then-contemporary version of Slackware.) The CDROM is external (SCSI, I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be thinking about for this?

Setting up large (12.5 TB) filesystem howto?
Hi, I'm trying to set up an iscsi 12.5 TB storage for some data backup. Doing so, I had some difficulties to find the right tool, maybe it's also a question of the system settings... The server is a 32Bit CentOS 5.3 with the recent updates. Ths iscsi connection can be establised. fdisk and parted fail to create any information on the device or fail completely. using the lvm tools

XCP
Hi there, We are using latest version of XCP on 6 hosts. While issuing VM.start or VM.start_on xmlrpc functional call , it says : {''Status'': ''Failure'', ''ErrorDescription'': [''SESSION_INVALID'', ''OpaqueRef:cfb6df14-387d-40a1-cc27-d5962cba7712'']} However if I put VM.start in a loop maybe after
