Hardware advice please?
...asic
configuration I would start with is the Two Zone setup. I don''t believe
that I have any need at this stage for a DMZ. (I would listen to any
advice though!)
My questions therefore relate to hardware and the firewall
arrangement.
1. I have a spare 486-DX2-66, and a spare Pentium-200MMX both
with minimum RAM, as well as a couple of small HDD 450 & 850MB.
Which of these would be the better to use as the FW, and how does
this FW PC impact on the performance of my small network
(basically Pentium 111 PC''s). Or are these PC''s inadequate for the
task? I can u...

Thank you! Upgrade from Novell 4.11 is complete
I just wanted to write to you guys and thank you for all of your help and
hand-holding as I upgraded our company's file server from a Pentium 200mmx
running Novell 4.11 to a nice P4 server running Linux and Samba 3.0.9. It
took from September to the end of December to accomplish it, but I have
gotten compliments from several users about how smooth the transition was.
My environment includes every version of Windows since (and including) Wi...

Problem with smbclient ...
Ok, got a real interesting bug here (if it is a bug).
I have 2 computers running samba, one is an HP, and the other is a Linux
machine. The network looks something like this:
HP9000 Linux Modem P5-200MMX
HP-UX 10.20 <--> Gateway <-- PPP link --> Linux 2.0.29
Stable .16 release .17 release, no patches applied
Everything is behind a firewall, so all traffic is "private".
There are also a couple of Win95/3.1 boxes hanging around on each network
(HP side and Linux side)....

''resource or device no longer available' error with large files
Hi.
I have a base 10 hub, a SAMBA 2.2.6 server on a
p200mmx, and a win98se box. Everything in
DIAGNOSTICS.txt checks out fine, and everything seems
to work ok until i try to send an iso image across.
That is when smbd crashes (about halfway/300M), and
win gives the error 'cannot copy or replace
<filename>: the resource or device is no longer

copying files samba - win95: drops dead in the middle
...copy <filename>: the specified network resource is no longer
available'.
The Samba server then says that the client closed the connection.
The server is a Pentium II 350 128M RAM with a SMC etherpower II 10/100 NIC.
Running kernel 2.0.36, and epic100 driver v.1.06
The client is a Pentium 200MMX with 64 M RAM with a SMC etherpower II 10/100
NIC
Running Windows95 OSR 2.
The client is connected to the server by a cross cable.
When I try ftp to transfer the 20M file this always goes in under 10
seconds.
Around 3 MB (MegaBYtes) per second.
When I use Linux and the smbclient on the client mac...

Samba performance
Hi all.
I know this has probably been asked before, but I need a quick answer, and
didn't find anything on the net.
Has anyone done any benchmark comparisons of server speed from Win95
clients, accessing files on a Samba 1.9.17p1 server share, as compared to
an NT Server, running on the same server hardware? If so, how did Samba
1.9.17 measure up to the NT server?
I need an answer to this,
