Stolen and degraded time and schedulers
The current Linux scheduler makes one big assumption: that 1ms of CPU time is the same as any other 1ms of CPU time, and that therefore a process makes the same amount of progress regardless of which particular ms of time it gets. This assumption is wrong now, and will become more wrong as virtualization gets more widely used. It's wrong now, because it fails to take into account of several

WiFi phone radiation regulation?
All, I just had the fortune to take one of the new Senao Wifi SIP phones for a short test drive. First look - it's a nice, compact phone. Weighs around 87g and roughly the size of a Nokia 6210. More on the those later. The thing that struck me was the RF power, it's rated at 100mw (20dBm). That's 10 times more than any of the other brands out on the market Cisco, WiSIP, Zyxel

voice quality of Aastra 480i CT and cordless
Hi Folks, Looking for feedback on the cordless phones with the Aastra 480i CT handset. Is voice quality comparable to standard consumer residential 2.4GHz cordless phones in the US$30 - $50 price range, or better/worse? How about handset and speakerphone quality for the main phone? Seems like there have been various big issues with firmware in past, but is it pretty stable now? Thanks,

Will a Quad-core i5 processor significantly speed up development on Linux or Mac?
I am looking at getting a new Thinkpad with an i5 processor. I was curious to what extent this would speed up developing a Ruby on Rails app. I am guessing that this depends to what extent multi-threading is utilized, but I am not sure---hence the question :^) If it is not that significant, my other choice would be to get a used Thinkpad or Mac Pro, duo-core. So is there a significant

Server Setup Advice
Hello Everybody! I am currently setting up an Asterisk server for medium to high load (approximately 20-35 concurrent phone lines). Do you think the following specs will sufficiently satisfy this system? CPU: XeonQC3220 2.4GHZ 8M RAM: 2X2GB/800 Harddrive: 1X250GB I could add harddrives and partition them into /var and /log directories to help with diskdrive throughput. Thanks! Elliot

Compiz not working properly using nvidia twinview
Hi, I am running ubuntu 7.10 gutsy, and I have compiz working on one monitor ( a bit slow though ). When I add twinview to the mix compiz still comes up, and sort of works but: 1. I loose the background and it is replace by all white 2. The second monitor draws about 30% of the new white background, then it ends with a bit of a shadow, and then it continues with black 3.

Smallest Memory requirements for Dom0
All, Has anybody tried to get Dom0 memory footprint as small as possible. I was thinking of building a cluster of PC''s (I have 20 or so P4 2.4Ghz 1GB RAM machines sitting around) that would be dedicated to Xen. I typically run each DomU with 1GB memory. I was hoping I could get Dom0 down to maybe 64Mb? Has anybody tried this. Would there be any performance impact? I plan on doing

Maximum call handling capacity on single server
Hi I have a server with Quad Core Xeon 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM. I want to use it for PSTN-IP gateway. What is the maximum call handling capacity I can achieve with this server? I want at least 480 concurrent PSTN-IP calls. That mean I will have to install minimum 4 x 4E1 cards and run 480 G.711 RTP sessions. No call recording. No IVR. Pure gateway functionality. Can I achieve this capacity with given

Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
Hello All, I recently put in a zaptel 1fxo/1fxs card. I am experiencing heavy static. Even with the pots line disconnected, if I do a dial I still get static. This way I know it's not the line, but rather something on the card. I tried alternate pci slots. This card has a power connector, does anyone know what the power requirements are? The unit is in a small case with a 2.4ghz p-4 and

Sizing a machine
Hello all, I am trying to determine if a machine I currently have would be adequate for the volume I want to put on it. I will be utilizing a PRI and I have approximately 70 extensions. We do not have extremely high call volume in or out. I could see maybe having the PRI fill with inbound/outbound calls, but that would be a fairly rare occurrence. There would be some light calling from

CentOS 6.4 kernel panic on boot after upgrading kernel to 2.6.32-431.29.2
I'm on a Supermicro server, X9DA7 motherboard, Intel C602 chipset, 2x 2.4GHz Intel Xeon E5-2665 8-core CPU, 96GB RAM, and I'm running CentOS 6.4. I just tried to use yum to upgrade the kernel from 2.6.32-358 to 2.6.32-431.29.2. However, I get a kernel panic on boot. The first kernel panic I got included stuff about acpi, so I tried adding noacpi noapic to the kernel boot parameters,

Compiling while * is running
I just fetched today's cvs (1/30/04 11:10:31). Compiles/installs on my test machine (ASUS A7V, 900 MHZ). However, If I try to compile on my production machine (Elite K7S5A, 2.4GHz, 512MB) while * is running the zaptel and asterisk compiles seg fault. I am assuming that they will compile correctly if I bring down * and rmmod the zaptel driver. 0.7.1 compiled and is now running. Is there

high CPU load for large # sources?
Hi all, I have an icecast setup with 20+ sources. During peak times some 20 sources will be connected with a total of some 250 listeners more-or-less equally divided over the 20 sources. All streams are running at a measly 16 kbps. There is enough bandwidth to/from the server. During these peak times I see very high CPU usage for icecast 98-99%. The system I'm running is an Intel Celeron
