Newbie: Subsets of data frame
I feel a bit embarassed by this, but I have not managed to find out how:
I have a data frame containing measurements over time for a number of
different locations:
> str(milk)
`data.frame': 845 obs. of 3 variables:
$ date : num 1987 1987 1987 1987 1987 ...
$ value : num 5 1 2 5 1 1 2 3 2 4 ...
$ location: Factor w/ 36 levels "Alta","And?y",..: 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ...
I assume there is some simpe way of extracting subsets of the data frame for
analysing the time series for just one of the location, but...

Accessing List within a List in a for Loop

experienced in Java, Python, SQL.
I am working with an object: Dataprocess and in it slot: data that is a
list.
Also I am creating generic functions to perform on the slot: data which is
the list.
I am working with the Airline dataset - so the data slot is a list of the
years 1987, 1988, ..
I am trying to perform factor and such operations on the column elements of
each year.
So - for purposes of this discussion we will refer to the column: dayOfWeek
in each of the years.
My issue is that while I get to the list I need I cannot directly access the
list elements to apply the...

Cleaning date columns
...n on specific dates. Some of
the dates are within 3 days of each other. I want to be able to clean my
date column and select the earliest of the dates that occur within 3 days of
each other per individual as a single observation that represents the N
observations. So for example:
input:
IND1 1987-09-17
IND1 1987-09-19
IND1 1989-05-04
output:
IND1 1987-09-17
IND1 1989-05-04
I'm not sure where to start with this?

large dataset import, aggregation and reshape

We have a data-set (comma delimited) with 12Millions of rows, and 5
columns (in fact many more, but we need only 4 of them): id, factor 'a'
(5 levels), factor 'b' (15 levels), date-stamp, numeric measurement. We
run R on suse-linux 9.1 with 2GB RAM, (and a 3.5GB swap file).
on average we have 30 obs. per id. We want to aggregate (eg. sum of the
