Theora file size
Hi
I was surprised with size of Theora files and thought
of feedback.
Following 1minute duration Theora and Xvid files were
made from a y4m file. The resolution is 1280x720:
1. Xvid 17MB
2. Ogg/Theora Q7 31MB
3. Ogg/Theora Q8 38MB
4. Ogg/Theora Q9 49MB
5. Ogg/Theora Q10 61MB
The Xvid file was made using mencoder by 2 passes with
following options:
bitrate=2500:autoaspect:chroma_opt:vhq=4:bvhq=1:quant_type=mpeg:pass=1
The encoder_example was used to create Ogg/Theora

Very slow read.table on Linux, compared to Win2000
Dear all,
I read.table a 17MB tabulator separated table with 483 variables(mostly numeric) and 15000
observations into R. This takes a few seconds with R 2.3.1 on windows 2000, but it takes
several minutes on my Linux machine. The linux machine is Ubuntu 6.06, 256 MR RAM,
Athlon 1600 processor. The windows hardware is better...

kernel-plus PXE virt-install with Xen?
...ot found any complete Google answers and was
looking for help making sure I choose the correct approach.
I've tried to build an initrd.img from a kernel-plus booting system via
"mkinitrd -f -v /boot/initrd.img $(uname -r)", but the file size is less
than half the one from CentOS 7.4 (17MB -vs- 47MB). I'm not even sure I can
just replace those files yet either.
Any help going the correct path?
Thanks
PJ

Digium X100P vs Dodgy Ebay X100P
...egrees
Dodgy Ebay: 47 degrees
With regards to reliability and performance I've had no problems (after my
initial typo's and lack of understanding were overcome); my friend has had
machine lock ups, dropped calls, awful hum on the lines etc.
I've got a couple of high quality (4000x3000 17mb JPG or 40+mb RAW) images
if anyone wants to compare have a look - for obvious reasons I though it
best not to post them to the list ;-)
Cheers

Need help with an odd issue I am experiencing
I have a server with dual nic's running centos 5.2 1 nic connects to the
cable modem, which has 15m d and 2m up, but speed tests barely come back
at 5mb down including road runner's internal speed test. I hook up my
laptop to the same modem, same port, using the same cable and I get 17mb
down. I have ruled out iptables, nics (because same result on both
nics), cables, cable modem(with a brighthouse rep) any suggestions would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bug#767295: Bug#767295: Bug#767295: xl: apparent memory leak
...4.4.1-3 with this patch (attached), and I
replaced the binary packages libxen-4.4 and xen-utils-4.4 with the new ones.
The situation is the same: the xl process for jessie amd64 guests starts
off at a resident size of 15mb as opposed to ~500kb for wheezy i386
guests. At guest reboot it jumps to 17mb and then, after a few seconds,
to ~34mb.
I also rebooted the host to help make sure the test is valid.
Thanks,
Gedalya

Unfortunately much to my embarrasment I can't currently use dovecot on my
own account. I get a meesage like this in /var/log/syslog:

/home/jaldhar/mail/inbox: LF not found where expected
The mbox in question is about 17MB and opens fine in uw-imapd. Any clues?

Weird Error
...ary)
And I got this weird error that I can not find out anything about?
"Process R unknown signal at Wed Apr 14 08:17:22 2004"
Have you seen anything like this before? Do you think it is the size of
the dataset that is causing the problem, since the same code works for
25000 rows (~17mb) and gives the correct results (I cross-checked in SAS
and EXCEL).
I was using R 1.8.0 in Xemacs.

Quicktime Vs Windows encoding with VP3
I found out about vp3 from the new winamp and coincidentally i also happen to be trying to find a suitable solution to broadband streaming.
I have used flaskmpeg to create a 17mb .avi file from an 82mb Mpeg 1 file and it looks great it took about twenty minutes to encode. It runs for eight minutes and the audio is also fantastic using the lame encoder.
However when I try to do the same in Quicktime with either Quicktime Pro 6 or Premiere6 or Ulead MSP6 I end up with a fil...

Memory usage with memdisk vs initrd a squashfs
Question,
Some Linux distributions I support show two approaches for pxe booting them. One uses memdisk to boot an ISO file. The other uses pxelinux to boot kernel and initrd a squashfs file.
I'm unfamiliar with the impact to memory either approach has. Like, does using memdisk permanently squirrel away a chunk of memory for the ISO file that the OS will be unable to use? Is using initrd to

I have not had time to do this yet .. BUT .. you can edit the lorax
template to to use kernel-plus instead of kernel (and new repodata)..
then rerun lorax to get a bootable...

Theora running on ARM device without floating point support
...le I will convert a yuv file with 150 frames (320x240 ~
17280000 bytes ) ? to an ogg file
mx27# time ./yuv2theora
File size = 17280000
This video has 150 frames!
real ? ?1m1.641s
user ? ?1m0.800s
sys ? ? 0m0.390s
Unfortunately the performance is not that good.
As a result I've converted a ~17MB yuv file to an 473KB ogg file in 61
seconds using 99% of CPU.
Any way to improve this?
The source code used in this test is available at :

Thanks in advance

Memory usage with memdisk vs initrd a squashfs
...tools like memdiskfind.
As far as efficiency, a small initrd to fetch another file will be
more efficient (an ISO might have extra unnecessary stuff like a copy
of the kernel and initrd) and would load faster. In my experience
TFTP with PXE tops out around 1 MB/s while an HTTP load can easily see
17MB/s or more. lpxelinux.0 (the lwIP-enabled PXELINUX for BIOS) can
achieive this as can gpxelinux.0/ipxelinux.0 or PXELINUX ontop of
gPXE/iPXE. You can also see this when loading the file after the
kernel is booted which would often be a little bit faster than
HTTP-capable PXELINUX.

[PATCH: ovirt-identify-node replacement 0/1] Node Image Patch
The purpose of this patch is to add the matahari qmf agent package
(http://git.et.redhat.com/?p=matahari.git;a=summary) to the node image.
Matahari is a qmf agent that publishes hardware information to an amqp
broker, replacing functionality from ovirt-identify-node. However, since
the capability is not ovirt specific, the agent is maintained as a separate
project (see link above).

Ubuntu HVM installation is very slow
Hi Everyone,
I am trying my hands on xen under Solaris SXCE build 113. The machine has
the following configuration:
2 Quad Core Xeon CPUs
16 GB RAM
Solaris SXCE b113
4 disks - 2 mirrors x 2 stripes under ZFS
The problem is that xen HVM is very slow. I am using the following command
to create an Ubuntu 9.0.4 test vm.
virt-install -n test1 -r 2048 --vcpus=2 -f /vdatapool/data/test1.img -s 50

Quality of vp3.2 codec?
How good is the video compression in vp3.2?
For example, how does it compare (bit rate & quality) to mpeg1, mpeg2,
Divx, real Video 8+, Windows Media, etc. etc.
It being open source is nice and all, but if it can't be reasonably
competitive then there isn't much point to it.
I just haven't seen anything that compares vp32 to anything else.
(Although to be honest, I haven't
