Slow Resilvering Performance
I know this topic has been discussed many times... but what the hell makes zpool resilvering so slow? I''m running OpenSolaris 2009.06. I have had a large number of problematic disks due to a bad production batch, leading me to resilver quite a few times, progressively replacing each disk as it dies (and now preemptively removing disks.) My complaint is that resilvering ends up

markdown implementation in C using PEG grammar
...;ve just uploaded an implementation of markdown in C. It defines the syntax using a PEG grammar, so it should be easy to extend and modify. Right now it can produce output in either HTML or LaTeX, but it would be simple to add other output formats. It's very fast: on my machine, it converts a 178K markdown file in 0.14 seconds (vs. 9.6 seconds for the latest Markdown.pl and 0.57 seconds for phpmarkdown). It passes all the tests in the Markdown 1.0.3 test suite, with one exception (an edge case where there is room for disagreement). It's on github at http://github.com/jgm/peg-markdown/t...

peg-markdown (C) and rpeg-markdown (ruby gem)
...m/peg-markdown/tree/HEAD/markdown_parser.leg peg-markdown now provides both a C library and a standalone 'markdown' program. The memory leaks in previous versions have been plugged, and parsing accuracy has been improved considerably. peg-markdown is very fast (on my machine, it parses a 178K benchmark file in 0.175 seconds; that's over 30 times faster than Markdown.pl v1.0.1). Optional syntax extensions are provided for footnotes and smart typography (these can be enabled using command-line switches). In addition to HTML, peg-markdown can convert markdown to LaTeX or groff-mm. Addi...

Why is libvorbis so big ?
I've been looking at the organisation of my project trying to trim down it's size a touch... and libvorbis, is really the only think bigger than 100k coming in at over 1 meg .dll I've been looking through the code for vorbis_enc as that's the object file taking 95% of the space, and i can't figure out why it is so damn big... there's only a few thousand lines of code there

Feature freeze on recommended packages coming up
As of 19:00 GMT we'll declare a feature freeze on the set of recommended packages. We will then have one week to ferret out as many problems as we can before final code freeze and platform testing. At the same time R-base is code-frozen, i.e. only critical bugs will be fixed. If you want to help making R 1.5.0 as bug-free as possible, it could be a good idea to install the set of

Extremely slow zpool scrub performance
Running a zpool scrub on our production pool is showing a scrub rate of about 400K/s. (When this pool was first set up we saw rates in the MB/s range during a scrub). Both zpool iostat and an iostat -Xn show lots of idle disk times, no above average service times, no abnormally high busy percentages. Load on the box is .59. 8 x 3GHz, 32GB ram, 96 spindles arranged into raidz zdevs on OI 147.

Any news on ZFS bug 6535172?
We''re running a Cyrus IMAP server on a T2000 under Solaris 10 with about 1 TB of mailboxes on ZFS filesystems. Recently, when under load, we''ve had incidents where IMAP operations became very slow. The general symptoms are that the number of imapd, pop3d, and lmtpd processes increases, the CPU load average increases, but the ZFS I/O bandwidth decreases. At the same time, ZFS

unaccounted for daily growth in ZFS disk space usage
We finally flipped the switch on one of our ZFS-based servers, with approximately 1TB of 2.8TB (3 stripes of 950MB or so, each of which is a RAID5 volume on the adaptec card). We have snapshots every 4 hours for the first few days. If you add up the snapshot references it appears somewhat high versus daily use (mostly mail boxes, spam, etc changing), but say an aggregate of no more than 400+MB a

Xen Networking problem!
Hi, I ''ve got a CentOS 5.2 server running xen 3.0 with 2 DomUs also running CentOS 5.2. All my boxes are up-to date. I''m experiencing trouble with networking. Dom0 can reach the outside world when no DomU are started. It can also reach the outside world when only one DomU is running. The troubles begin when I start the second DomU. At first, this new DomU, called DomU2,
