Strange memory issue
...production systems have 5 mongrels, and they
start at around 50M as well. However, hit them with thousands of page
views and their memory usage rarely passes 60M. It''s almost as if the
GC isn''t running on the test system. There is still plenty of free
memory on the prod system (148M). The test system will usually use it
all up and often begin swapping.
Any thoughts? Any ideas where I might look? I prefer to not even pay
for the 512M VM for the test system, but it doesn''t seem to want to
conserve memory.

PCBSD & X11 ugh
So, I tried out PCBSD on a Dell "DHP" (what ever that is) (made feb '05).
it installs great
but when I run boot it, (FreeBSD comes up fine) teh X server goes into
an infinite loop somewhere.
168 root 1 0 0 148M 6976K rdnrel 0:57 93.85% Xorg
and the screen stays black.
the fan goes onto "tornado" mode and it just sits there.
attempting to send a signal -9 to the x server has no effect so its
stuck in the kernel somewhere.
does anyone have any X11 foo (or PCBSD foo) to let me know how to g...

FreeBSD 9.0 - GPT boot problems?
Hi,
I just installed FreeBSD 9.0-release / amd64 on a new machine (Acer Aspire X1470).
I installed from a usb memory stick (the default amd64 image), which I booted by pressing "F12" and selecting it from the boot menu on the machine.
I installed on a SSD (which replaced the hard drive originally in the machine), using the default scheme for 9.0 (GPT).
The installation was painless (many

Subsetting to unique values
I want to take the first row of each unique ID value from a data frame.
For instance
> ddTable <-
data.frame(Id=c(1,1,2,2),name=c("Paul","Joe","Bob","Larry"))
I want a dataset that is
Id Name
1 Paul
2 Bob
> unique(ddTable)
Will give me all 4 rows, and
> unique(ddTable$Id)
Will give me c(1,2), but not accompanied by the name column.
