substring/strsplit question
Dear R People:
Here is a toy example:
> x <- c("2E","5W","12H")
> substr(x,2,2)
[1] "E" "W" "2"
>
Sometimes x has 3 elements, sometimes 2. I want to extract the last
element, and then extract the other 1 or 2 elements.
How can I do this, please?
TIA,
Sincerely,
Erin

ssh-agent w/timeout: does ssh-add reset that timeout?
I run ssh-agent like this:
/usr/bin/ssh-agent -t 12h -s
If I run ssh-add will it reset the timeout period back to 12h for that
key, if it was already known to ssh-agent?
I ask because I've looked at the documentation and performed
exhaustive google searches for the answer and I've found no mention of
this issue anywhere.
Thank you.

How to clear sessions with cron?
Anyone got a quick code snippet I can add to my crontab? Since Rails
doesn''t do any housekeeping, my /tmp directory just keeps getting fatter
and fatter. I found this useless snippet in the Agile book:
find /tmp/ -name ''ruby_sess*'' -ctime +12h -delete
Fedora Linux complains about the ''h'' in 12h, then if you remove the ''h''
he complains about the ''-delete'' part too which doesn''t even seem to
exist in the man page for find.
Anyone got a snippet that actually works? ;-)

Shadow copy format for snapshots and Samba
...e), then do a symlink(? -- maybe something lower) from the .zfs/snapshot/snapname to @GMT-$time (time format documented in the above link -- and it must be GMT).
Of course the symlink/whatever would get removed when the snapshot is removed.
If we had that and auto snapshotting like 2 at 30m, 2 at 12h, 7 at 1d, 4 at 1w (take a snapshot every 30 minutes and keep the last 2, etc) -- I would be in heaven.
Oh and I don''t think I have said "Thank you" or could say it enough for zfs -- I''m so excited!

load huge image
hello,
i have run around 65000 regressions and stored them in a list. then i stored
the session with save.image on my hard disk. the file is almost 1GB. when i
now want to load the image it took tons of time. even after 12h of loading it
was not done, although the saving was done fairly fast.
i fear i have to run the regressions again and store them in a database ...
can i load this file? any suggestions?
thanks & bets regards,

C8 install problems
...et 1Tb disc attached, via a USB cable from a SATA docking station, to a ASUS PC running Windows 7. I boot up via the DVD just fine on the PC, but I've not been able to get past the errors from iSCSI and /dev/root.
I do see a message at the very beginning of the install that the hardware family 12h is "not supported upstream". I'm not sure if that message is important, or a red herring.
Is it possible that the Orico SATA docking station (model 6619) has been dropped in C8 ?
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
