locfit and memory allocation
...a function that uses
locfit within a for loop. After 25 or so loops, it gives this error.
"Error: cannot allocate vector of size 281250 Kb"
Running on linux cluster with a Gb of RAM. Problem never happens on my
OS X (less memory). The total data is 130 cols by 5000 rows
The first 129 cols are response variables, the 130th is the parameter
The function fits a local regression between the 129 variables in the
ith row of m[ ] to the 129 variables in 5000 rows after m was fed into
130 different vectors called Var1, .....Var129, and PARAMETER.

multicolumn sort on dataframe?
I couldn't find any reference to this in the FAQ, but is it possible to sort
a dataframe by multiple columns?
I've created some code, similar to the following:
nspr.code <- sp.results$sp.code[order( sp.results$sp.code )]
nspr.tpa <- sp.results$tpa[order( sp.results$sp.code )]
nspr.code <- as.character( levels( nspr.code ) )[nspr.code]
nspr.tpa <- as.numeric( levels( nspr.tpa

rsync returns unexplained error (code 129)
...$dest_host:$dir_name
Althoug when I try to synchronize using the same command over the internet (port mapping is enabled for SSH) the synchronization process starts, but terminates after about one or half an hour and returns the following error message:
"rsync error: unexplained error (code 129) at rsync.c(541) [sender=3.0.3]"
Could anyone explain this error or suggest a solution?
Thanks in advance,
Joris

How to vectorize
...te nicely the names of some isotopes on a plot. The
code bellow works fine.
plot(1:10,1:10)
text(c(2,4,8),c(2,4,8),labels=c(expression(italic(phantom(0)^{78}*Ge)),
expression(italic(phantom(0)^{137}*Cs)),
expression(italic(phantom(0)^{129*m}*Te))),
cex=3
)
But, since I have a lot of isotopes to write on the plot, I would like
to construct automatically the labels. So I wrote the code below which
works fine.
listenoms <- list(nom=c("Ge","Cs","Te"),num=c("78","137","...
