problems with memory allocation
I hope that someone has had a similar trouble and will be able to help us : We , have installed the R package in a Digital Workstation with 500Mb of RAM memory, running under Unix operating system. The package works fine but when we try to start the program with more than 120Mb, (vsize - --120M) the workstation refuses to allocate this memory. The message that we get is: Fatal error: Could not allocate memory for vector heap. Someone told us that the solution was an appropiate ulimit call, but when we do ulimit -a we get only a number 1048576. We figure out that this...

unexpected R crash - again
...and it still crashes with the "referenced memory cannot be read" message. I also noticed that the error message comes immediately, no matter how large the memory allocation is. This machine is a Pentium Pro 200Mhz with 192Mb of memory (2) On my Linux box I can only go to about --vsize=120M --nsize=1000k. This is a Pentium MMX 266Mhz with 64Mb of memory. The machine crashes after "thinking" for about 3 seconds. It produces segmentation violation error and dumps core. It seems to me that, unless I have some unlucky machines, the problem is not just handling too small...

Mongrel using way more memory on production than staging. Any ideas why?
I''ve been trying to track down the culprit of erratic behaviour and crashes on my production server (which is split into a number of Xen instances), so set up a staging server so that I could really try to get to the bottom of it. The staging server (also split with Xen) is set up pretty much identically as far as the mongrel_cluster server is concerned (the production box has two

ZFS userquota groupquota test
...I have yet to start large scale testing. But the initial work is very promising. (Just 90G data, 341694 accounts) Using userquota@, userused@ and userspace commands are easy to pick up. With a test account with 50M quota, and a "while [ 1 ]" script copying a 5M file, it reaches about 120M before the user is stopped (as expected). The lazy-update-quota is not a problem for us, and less of a problem the more quota the user has (50M is a bit low). I was unable to get ZFS quota to work with rquota. (Ie, NFS mount the volume on another server, and issue "quota 1234". It ret...

puppet: 3.1.1 -> 3.2.1 load increase
Hi, I recently updated from puppet 3.1.1 to 3.2.1 and noticed quite a bit of increased load on the puppetmaster machine. I''m using the Apache/passenger/rack way of puppetmastering. Main symptom is: higher load on puppetmaster machine (8 cores): - 3.1.1: around 4 - 3.2.1: around 9-10 Any idea why there''s more load on the machine with 3.2.1? -- You received this

Request to speed up save()
Hi, I am dealing with very large datasets and it takes a long time to save a workspace image. The options to save compressed data are: "gzip", "bzip2" or "xz", the default being gzip. I wonder if it's possible to include the pbzip2 (http://compression.ca/pbzip2/) algorithm as an option when saving. "PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2

Strange memory issue
Like most, I have a test and a production env. Both are CentOS 5, Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 2.0.2, MySQL 5, and Apache. Both were setup using the same procedure. Except for the hardware (test: Intel, prod: AMD) and memory (test: 512M, prod: 1G), both systems are essentially the same right down to the Rails env. Unfortunately, memory usage is very different for each. The test system has 2 mongrel

home directory server performance issues
I?m looking for advice and considerations on how to optimally setup and deploy an NFS-based home directory server. In particular: (1) how to determine hardware requirements, and (2) how to best setup and configure the server. We actually have a system in place, but the performance is pretty bad---the users often experience a fair amount of lag (1--5 seconds) when doing anything on their home
