Upgrade from UFS Sol 10u5 to ZFS Sol 10u6/OS 2008.11[SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Hi ZFS gods,
I have a x4500 I wish to upgrade from a SVM UFS Sol 10u5 to a ZFS
rpool 10u6 or Opensolaris.
Since I know (via backing up my sharetab) what shares I need to have
(all nfs share - no cifs on this 4500 - YAY) and have organised
downtime for this server, would it be easier for me to go to Solaris
10u6 (or opensolaris) by just installing from scratch and re-importing

"zfs send" from solaris 10/08 to "zfs receive" on solaris 10/09
I built a fileserver on solaris 10u6 (10/08) intending to back it up to
another server via zfs send | ssh othermachine ''zfs receive''
However, the new server is too new for 10u6 (10/08) and requires a later
version of solaris . presently available is 10u8 (10/09)
Is it crazy for me to try the send/receive with th...

I/O performance problems on Dell 1850 w/ PERC 4e/Si RAID1 (Sol 10U6)
I''ve got Solaris 10 U6 with a ZFS boot/root installed on a Dell 1850 here, patched up as of this morning (kernel 141415-10). The system is running with hardware-mirrored disks, via the LSI MegaRAID controller, a PERC 4e/Si. 4G of RAM, one dual-core 3.4GHz CPU.
The system is a simple mail hub, and it does the task very well. Most files exist only very briefly, and thus rarely touch the

Verbose Information from "zfs send -v <snapshot>"
What ''verbose information'' is reported by the "zfs send -v <snapshot>" contain?
Also on Solaris 10u6 I don''t get any output at all - is this a bug?

zfs root, jumpstart and flash archives
I understand that currently, at least under Solaris 10u6, it is not
possible to jumpstart a new system with a zfs root using a flash archive
as a source.
Can anyone comment as to whether this restriction will pass in the near
term, or if this is a while out (6+ months) before this will be possible?
Thanks,

signal 10 error under dovecot 1.1.8
Hi,
We're seeing a new error under Dovecot 1.1.8 that we haven't seen before.
Sep 14 09:00:10 hostname dovecot: [ID 684838 local6.error] child 638
(imap) killed with signal 10
This is being seen under dovecot 1.1.8, on Solaris 10u6. This is the only
server we've got running this software. We're not seeing this on any of
our other 5 servers running the 1.1.x series. Namely 1.1.6 on Solaris
10u6.
Any idea what might be causing this error to pop up?
Thanks,

Zpool scrub in cron hangs u3/u4 server, stumps tech support.
...#39;m not really happy about doing as a bug fix to a production
server running a supported version of Sun OS. Once Upon a Time, Sun
used to offer *patches* to paying customers for operating system bugs.
I quote the latest ticket note in disgust: "I really don''t know what
to tell you. S10u6 has many enhancements and improvments to zfs, but
most can be gained though patchs with the exception of new features."
I''m trying to escalate the ticket, but really, I''m angry. I''ve been a
big champion of staying with Sun/Solaris over Linux and one of the
reasons h...

Sol10u7: can''t "zpool remove" missing hot spare
I''m using Solaris 10u6 updated to u7 via patches, and I have a pool
with a mirrored pair and a (shared) hot spare. We reconfigured disks
a while ago and now the controller is c4 instead of c2. The hot spare
was originally on c2, and apparently on rebooting it didn''t get found.
So, I looked up what the new nam...

Bad SWAP performance from zvol
I''ve upgraded my system from ufs to zfs (root pool).
By default, it creates a zvol for dump and swap.
It''s a 4GB Ultra-45 and every late night/morning I run a job which takes
around 2GB of memory.
With a zvol swap, the system becomes unusable and the Sun Ray client often
goes into "26B".
So I removed the zvol swap and now I have a standard swap partition.

ZFS+NFS+refquota: full filesystems still return EDQUOT for unlink()
...e a simple recourse to fix this (e.g., rm). I played around with
this on my OpenSolaris box at home, read around on mailing lists, and
concluded that the ''refquota'' property would solve this. With some
trepidation, we decided at work that we would ignore the problem and
wait for 10u6, at which point we would put the value of the quota
property in the refquota property, and set quota=none. We did this a
week or so ago, and we''re still having the problem. Here''s an
example:

14.4G samba filesystem limit?
...n only has 14.4G free..."
If I force the operation to happen, it will happily write 18G or whatever
... and then it will still report 14.4G free.
Anybody have any idea where this 14.4G number is coming from, or how to
correct it?
My server is the latest release of Solaris (which is 10u6 ( akaSolaris 10
10/08)) running the version of samba that ships with it. (Not the built-in
cifs kernel module; I am actually using samba).
My clients are Vista 64 and Windows XP Pro 32bit.
Please let me know if any further details might be helpful ... Thanks for
any pointers...

[LLVMdev] What is the canonical way to build on Solaris 10?
Hi,
I am trying to get r114797 to build on Solaris 10u6 (5.10
Generic_142901-03).
gcc 4.2 is installed and configured with:
-bash-3.00$ /opt/gcc4/bin/gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: i386-pc-solaris2.10
Configured with: ./configure --prefix=/opt/gcc4 --with-gnu-as
--with-as=/usr/sfw/bin/gas --without-gnu-ld --with-ld=/usr/ccs/bin/ld

Adding zvols to a DomU
I''m trying to add extra zvols to a Solaris10 DomU, sv_113 Dom0
I can use
virsh attach-disk <name> <zvol> hdb --device phy
to attach the zvol as c0d1. Replacing hdb by hdd gives me c1d1 but then
that is it. Being able to attach several more zvols would be nice but even
being able to get at c1d0 would be useful
Am I missing something or can I only attach to hda/hdb/hdd?

POSIX permission bits, ACEs, and inheritance confusion
I am running a test system with Solaris 10u6 and I am somewhat confused as to how ACE inheritance works. I''ve read through http://opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/docs/zfsadmin.pdf but it doesn''t seem to cover what I am experiencing.
The ZFS file system that I am working on has both aclmode and aclinherit set to passthrough...

SIL3114 and sparc solaris 10
Perhaps a bit off-topic (I asked on the rescue list --
http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/OaDWVGdLhxWVWIEabz4F -- and was
told to try here), but I am kinda shooting in the dark: I have been
finding online scattered and vague info stating that this card can be
made to work with a sparc solaris 10 box

zfs send to remote any ideas for a faster way than ssh?
I''ve tried ssh blowfish and scp arcfour. both are CPU limited long before the 10g link is.
I''vw also tried mbuffer, but I get broken pipe errors part way through the transfer.
I''m open to ideas for faster ways to to either zfs send directly or through a compressed file of the zfs send output.
For the moment I;
zfs send > pigz

Running on Dell hardware?
I have a Dell R710 which has been flaky for some time. It crashes about
once per week. I have literally replaced every piece of hardware in it, and
reinstalled Sol 10u9 fresh and clean.
I am wondering if other people out there are using Dell hardware, with what
degree of success, and in what configuration?
The failure seems to be related to the perc 6i. For some period around the
