Browsing on remote subnets, domain logons
...C) Ms and SS are linux servers with samba. others are workstations with WinMe. Can I make all subnets and all computers to see all computers on all subnets without using WINS? So A should see SS, B and C. Because between MS and SS is very long network (connection between two divided LANs) made of 10BASE2, it is considered unreliable. Thus MS and SS should be always ready to answer all authorization on its direct subnets, and be backup for others. Thats because C is in the middle, and have connection to both MS and SS. If one connection is broken, LANs will be divided but should be operational itsel...

_real_ browsing problem...
...imes and spending YY hours analysing nmbd's log files. I hope somebody can point us to the right direction or tell us where to find more information about how browsing in our setup is supposed to work. The physical network setup is the following: Each level in our building has its own ethernet 10base2 network which the student's workstations and servers are connected to. The network address is 10.8.100+XX.0/24 where XX is the level. Our building is 18 levels high. These networks are connected using a single backbone and routers, rendering each level-network and the backbone network (10.8.1.0...

2.0.6 and FreeBSD 3.3-RELEASE + socket options = 2.5MB/sec
...0Mbit switch running at full duplex. The disk subsystem clocks at about 5MB/sec max (disks are old wide differential). Part of the problem appears to be that I started testing before the switch had adjusted to the new system completely. Earlier testing showed an error rate just under the old .1% 10BASE2 limit; currently there are none. Mike Squires

Testing Samba and NFS/AMD inter-action
...ly did happen), so yet another filesystem (6GB, backed-up this time<whew>) bites the dust. Like any good engineer, I took the opportunity to upgrade-revamp some things <grin>. I took the opportunity to implement a uniform file structure, among the Linux-based servers, the LAN went from 10base2 to switched 100baseTX, I added 14GB of disk space, a third server for accounting, cut back to NIS (from shadows), built a new NOC workstation, and re-organizd the gateway-customer space. We also installed two APC Smart-UPS 1400's. All of the filesystems are linked together with NFS/AMD. Samba...

Once more into the breech (browsing problems)
...osis.txt work fine. Any ideas anyone? We have no real network analysis tools, etc. Are we just clueless, or does this SMB/CIFS stuff just suck the big schween? Can a network card appear to work but send out crap that confuses other machines? We're in the process of converting over from 10Base2 to 10Base-T; is it possible for these kinds of problems to be caused by flaky coax connectors, bad cable, etc? It seems to me that if it was really hardware related, then the TCP/IP layer wouldn't work either. I'm going to try some of the samba config parameters (name resolve order, W...

[Bridge] Bridge not bridging NFS fragments?
...ped. Policies for INPUT, FORWARD, OUTPUT are all "ACCEPT", and I grepped for all REJECT and DROP rules in iptables -nvL, their counters are constant, i. e. they aren't rejecting or dropping packets. Setup: FreeBSD5 Linux Bridge FreeBSD4 xl0 ----10base2---- eth2 eth0 ----100baseTx---- fxp0 The FreeBSD machines are attempting to talk NFS with each other, the machine on the left sends a read request, which is bridged, and the machine on the right sends a fragmented UDP packet of 8K, this is as observed on eth0: 14:33:59.320397 192.168.0.49.1749...

samba-des has bad performance
Hello! I have a problem with samba. I run the freebsd samba-des port (samba-des-1.9.17.4) in a pretty much vanilla setting; home dir, a few shared dirs, no printing (yet). The problem is performance. While Samba is not terribly slow it's still too slow. Copying large files takes about half a minute/meg on an Ethernet LAN with no other activity. Trying to read a file using netscape
