Automate running grub-bootxen.sh for kernel installs in Xen4CentOS
...g it if xen (the package) and the xen kernel are
installed. But only if the user WANTS to run it.
2. Allow users to automatically modify the variables passed into the
xen.gz line (that is, more or less memory, add console settings, etc.)
If you look at the current script, "--mbargs=dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M
loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all" is hard coded in as the only option for the
xen.gz line.
While doing that we also still want to preserve the ability to run that
kernel in other places than just for xen dom0 setups.
Here is how I propose we do that.
Currently the /usr/bin/grub-bootxen...

This is what's defined in /etc/default/grub following the install of the
Xen:
GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M cpuinfo com1=115200,8n1
console=com1,tty loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_XEN_REPLACE_DEFAULT="console=hvc0 earlyprintk=xen
nomodeset"
I didn't set these myself, this is what the xen package (or one of its
dependencies) is doing.
I'm still not clear...

Fwd: Xen4CentOS kernel panic on dom0 reboot
...different Dell R710's with xen-4.2.4-29.el6 and at least the kernels kernel-3.10.25-11.el6.centos.alt.x86_64 and kernel-3.10.23-11.el6.centos.alt.x86_64. I have not tried to reboot with the latest kernel-3.10.32-11.el6.centos.alt.x86_64 (if kernel even makes a difference). I *have* had dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M option in place for all of them with only 6 VM's.
Any new suggestions?

It never gets beyond that. If I choose the stock kernel (no Xen) from the Grub menu, it will continue to boot into that just fine.

Doubt on XEN memory management: please clarify
...for my environment.
I know about memory ballooning
(http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenBestPractices)
and the dom0_mem parameter, but I would like to know what such parameter
implies, in practise.
Let''s go with my XEN setup now.
I have 8GB of RAM and I have seen that if I put dom0_mem=1024M option, the dom0
has 1GB of RAM for itself.
What does this really mean? This is confusing me, because I don''t understand how
to decide the amount of RAM to assign to the dom0. For example, what if I assign
256M? What if 8192M?
For sure you can say to try, but it is not so clear to me what...

Test new xen, centos-release-xen and kernel for auto grub update on kernel install
...... if there is any
other items you want on the 'kernel /xen.gz' line, you would edit the
file. For example, I like to add 'com1=115200,8n1 console=com1' to the
end of that line so I can use consoles in virsh. So I would change the
line:
XEN_KERNEL_MBARGS="--mbargs=dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M loglvl=all
guest_loglvl=all"
to
XEN_KERNEL_MBARGS="--mbargs=dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M loglvl=all
guest_loglvl=all com1=115200,8n1 console=com1"
(both of those should be one line if they wrap)
This is also where you can assign more or less memory to the dom0. etc.
This a...
