1000Hz kernel
Hi I was reading this article on installing asterisk 1.6 + debian http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-and-configuring-asterisk-1.6-and-postgresql-to-manage-cdr-and-realtime-config-on-debian and I noticed they suggested to recompile to 1000Hz enable kernel, I currently have a 250Hz stock standard kernel. I am running on a soekris board - amd geode cpu. Is recompiling the kernel to the 1000Hz going to be beneficial to me, the box is primarily used for firewall router / voip (Asterisk) Alex

Linux Kernel Timer Frequency and Asterisk
Ok here is a real geek question, I building my own linux kernel for my asterisk system and came across the kernel setting for the timer frequency. I have one of 3 hardcode choices 100Hz, 250 Hz and 1000Hz. From what I understand the default Freq was changed from 100Hz in kernel 2.4 to 1000Hz (1KHz) in kernel 2.6. Timing is a BIG issue in asterisk with all the TDM and zap channel stuff. My guess is to go with the lower 100 or 250 Hz option but that is only a guess. The 1KHz sounds like it wil...

Questions about 1000HZ Kernel
..., The XEN kernel in "XEN RELEASE-4.0.1" is shipped with the following config parameters: CONFIG_HZ_1000=y CONFIG_HZ=1000 At many blogs and forums there is a discussion that the CONFIG_HZ parameter should be changed to 250 HZ or 300 HZ. We will operate a DomU and the Dom0 with the same 1000HZ Kernel. Is this setup possible and recommended. How high is the performance cut-off? Which option is more suitable for Xen systems? Running Xen 2.0 for Counter Strike: Source
...n a fine benchmark tool :-) The fps number should be much higher. On my home server (a single p4 running lots and lots of stuff) the reading is 150-200 average untweaked with basic settings. In the counter strike forums there is word about the kernel hz. They say the kernel should be configured to 1000hz. fortunately the used 2.6.11.12 kernel has a standard setting of 1000hz. As you can see in the kernel source: include/i386/param.h. However current readings in cs are more like hz is set to 250! Can I expect this to be the same in xen 3.0? Is the default 1000hz changed by the Xen patches for the...

About profiling xen
Hi there, I am getting very low throughput (around 0.29Mbps) while running netperf benchmark for guest to guest communication on a single physical host. To analyse where the time is spent in hypervisor I wanna use profiling. Please help me choosing good profiler according to my requirments. Should it be better in my case, Xentrace, gprof, xenoprof  or Oprofile. Is it possible to use some vtune

I worked around it by making the ztdummy driver count 10 ticks for each jiffy. My music on hold works now but clicks and pops a bit which I think may be because of my kludge. High CPU usage when running a CentOS guest in VirtualBox
Hi, I am running CentOS 5.3 32bit as a VirtualBox 3.0.0 guest running on Windows XP. The Windows host CPU usage is constantly at 50% although the CentOS guest is completely idle (i.e. 0.00 load average). I know this is a common problem related to the 1000Hz frequency that the CentOS kernel runs at. With previous versions of CentOS, I used the kernel-vm package [1] and it solved my problem. However, according to the README [2] this isn't necessary as of CentOS 5.3 and therefore these packages are not maintained anymore (the latest released kernel-v...

Voicemail prompts garbled
...The system is a dual processor Xeon 2.4G. HT is off. Kernel is generic 2.4.25. Software CVS date is 3/26/04. Zaptel has __SMP__ variable on. CONFIG_ZAPATA_NET is also on but the hdlc0 devices aren't configured. Having said that, I just called a Qwest test number that gives 5 seconds of 1000Hz tone. Each time I make the call from a 7940 I hear (exactly) 4 seconds of tone followed by 3 burps. This is consistent for each call. Can anyone help me out with this? Kernel timer frequency and HTB
...c shaping. My link is 10Mbit/s full duplex. I have set some HTB classes with a rate of 20% (2Mbit/s) and a ceil of 95% (9.5Mbit/s). Is such an excursion of bandwidth in the HTB classes feasible for HTB to control? What Timer frequency (kernel menuconfig) is the most suitable among 250, 300 and 1000Hz for HTB? Also, I really don''t have any ideas on how the frequency could affect the network adapter performance. Is a high frequency going to have bad effects on interrupts handling? Has anybody any suggestions about this issue? I have some warnings about HTB quantums being too big, but...

RE: [on-asterisk] containers, virtualization, and high availability
I've been trying out asterisk on xen myself. One thing to note for anyone that is experimenting that by default the Xen kernel runs at 100hz. To use ztdummy you need a 1000hz source so you need to recompile the dom0 and domU kernels with 1000hz. If remember correctly you also need to set CONFIG_CRC_CCITT=y in the kernel as well. I have not tested the service migration but it does sound interesting. I'm interesting in trying to get DRDB to work between machines. T...

Audio cutting in and out - asterisk 13.1 cert6 / confbridge
...mple matter of running dahdi_test which would report the accuracy. I'm not sure how to interpret the results of "timing test" in the Asterisk CLI. If I increase the number of ticks per second the results are erratic while under load. I'm using the timerfd module in Asterisk with a 1000HZ tick kernel and high res timers enabled. I've tried both hpet and tsc as system clock sources, both exhibit the same breaks in audio. It sounds like someone presses the mute button in the middle of a sentence. Any insight is appreciated! Here are the specs on the new install: Physical HW...

Voice linmodems and Asterisk PBX
Hello group, Just got this reply from Sasha @ Smart Link, a soft modem chipset company with a very nice attitude towards Linux. BTW, You can check the status of most modem chipsets and Linux support here: http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/dips/roster.html The good news is that the current 2.7.x series supports voice commands and is full duplex, but can only work with one modem. This issue will

Asterisk and Xen
Hey All, I've been working on trying to get asterisk to play nice under Xen and I've run into a bit of a road block. I'm not using any hardware stuff only ztdummy. First I had issues getting ztdummy to work but that was solved by recompiling the xenU kernel to have CONFIG_CRC_CCITT=y which it was missing. Now ztdummy is seen fine in the virtual machine though when I run

Stable clock with 2.6 and without Digium hardware.
Anybody sucessfully got stable 1000Hz clock without Digium harware and kernel 2.6? We need to consult some peoples how to clock asterisk stable with exactly 1000 Hz without much kernel/drives patching/tweaking. Some test results we made so far: 2.6 with digium card - stable 1000 Hz. 2.6 with ztdummy - uses RTC and the clock is 1024,...

Looking for new ideas to improve linux router performace
...machines to the limit with 4 class C and double above rules and traffic Currently system takes no more then 60% CPU time at pick per working CPU as every NIC has been set on different CPU, and I have two idle CPUs on each machine . Currently Linux kernels are coming with timer interrupt of 1000hz max which in my opinion is not enough Also there is no way to serve interrupts from one NIC on two processors. I''m open for suggestions Thanks to all in advance. _______________________________________________ LARTC mailing list LARTC@mailman.ds9a.nl http://mailman.ds9a.nl/cgi-b...

Time Synchronization
Hi! Can anybody explain how Xen deals with time? On traditional, non-virtualized systems I run an ntpd on every system to keep the time accurate. But what to do on xenified systems? Do all the domU''s get the time from dom0 meaning it is sufficient to run an ntpd there or do I have it to setup in every domU? Thanks for your help! Kind regards, Stephan

Good news for virtual EL-4.x boxes
...of 100Hz). I'm expecting the 4.7 beta to become available Real Soon Now(TM), though I have no information as to when that will occur. In the meantime, this change is available as a hotfix from Red Hat's Global Support Services. What this does is take the kernel tick rate (which defaults to 1000Hz) and divides it by the value of divider, to come up with an effective interrupt rate. You can verify that this is working by: Before making the change, use 'watch --interval=1 cat /proc/interrupts' and you'll notice that the timer interrupt is incrementing by 1000 every second. After y...

asterisk running @ 100% load doing nothing
Hi guys, I just ran into a funny issue here. I'm trying to virtualize our asterisk pbx onto vmware esxi. Here's a quick glance of the system: * Ubuntu 9.10 i386 with linux-rt kernel (to get 1000Hz timer) everything up2date. * Asterisk 1.6.2.6 If I run asterisk using the debian init script in contrib/init.d/, top shows asterisk is using 99.x% CPU doing nothing. If I run asterisk with -vvvc, it runs just fine. It's the same thing either running under root or asterisk (set in asterisk.con...
