GLMM: MEEM error due to dichotomous variables
...lA<-glmmPQL(Leaving~Trial*Day*Dist,random=~1|Indiv,family="binomial") I get the error: iteration 1 Error in MEEM(object, conLin, control$niterEM) : Singularity in backsolve at level 0, block 1 >From looking at previous help topics,( http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/02a/4473.html) I gather this is because of the dichotomous predictor variables - what approach should I take to avoid this problem? Compiling R-1.7.0 on Mac OS X
...1036: `CFunTab' undeclared (first use in this function) Rdynload.c:1036: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once Rdynload.c:1036: for each function it appears in.) Looking back through the list, I saw this problem was discussed last year (http://maths.newcastle.edu.au/~rking/R/help/02a/4840.html), and I have tried the solution proposed there, using the Fink version of dlcompat, but with no success. Does anyone have another suggestion? If people reply to me in the first instance I will summarize the replies to thee list. Thanks for any help, Stuart -- stuart at feerick.org...

How to get special (Hershey) font symbols into plot axis labels? [Revisited]
Dear R users, I would like to use sub- and super-script in axis labels. I assume this is best done using Hershey symbols. When trying to find information on using Hershey font symbols in axis labels, I came across the following discussion thread: http://maths.newcastle.edu.au/~rking/R/help/02a/1857.html Have Hershey font implementations moved on since then? Thanks, Sander. -- -------------------------------------------- Dr Sander P. How to concatenate expressions
...hem before displaying the result to the plot. I currently cannot find a way to make this concatenation works. I have read several posts in the list that solved this problem by pasting the different elements together before creating the expressions (like in http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/02a/4790.html). I cannot implement this solution because my expressions and numerical/character vectors are passed to the function and not create inside the function. I would greatly appreciate any help with the following example code. Thank you testplot <- function(a,b,c) { text <- as.e...

Hershey fonts and substitute()
Hello R users, I am new to R, so this may be a very stupid question. I need to subscript the dotted circle (Hershey escape sequence "\\SO") to a string. I tried using text(.5,.5,substitute( R[disk] == 5 R["\\SO"] ) ) but it turns out to be a syntax error. Do you have any suggestion? Thanks Gaetano

configure succeeds without dlfcn.h, but fails to compile (OS X) (PR#2875)
...my limited ability to read ./configure suggests that it tests for dlfcn.h, but does not fail if it doesn't find it on Darwin/OS X. Given that it is required to compile, it seems like configure should fail. This error was reported in June 2002 (http://maths.newcastle.edu.au/~rking/R/help/02a/4783.html) and discussed briefly in a thread I started on R-SIG-Mac, which contains a few more details (https://www.stat.math.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig-mac/2003-April/000832.html). The error: ./configure --enable-R-shlib --with-x \ --with-blas='-framework vecLib' \ --with-lapack ... ./mak...

Changing the position of the origin
Hi all, Can anyone tell me how I can make 0,0 start at the top left hand corner of a graph, instead of the typical lower left hand corner? I've tried to plot with axes=F and then putting on the axes later, but I want the points to correspond to the axes. Thanks, Kang Min

Labelling boxplot with fivenumber summary
I am very new to R so forgive me if this seems basic but I have done extensive searching and failed to come up with the answer for myself. I am trying to label a boxplot I have created with the values for the median, upper and lower quartiles and max and min values. I have been unable to do this or find anything on the net to say how it might be done. Is this possible and if so how? Regards,

legend outside axes of image or other plot
I have tried and tried unsuccessfully to place a legend outside the plot frame of a graph. This would allow me to draw a legend for an image() plot. But any legend I add is cut off outside the axes. Is there a way of doing this? Thanks for any advice on how to make this work (I'm using R1.5.1 with Windows 2000). Richard Condit Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Unit 0948 APO AA

Multiple random effects inlme?
Moi! I was helping to teach a course on mixed models this week, and we came across a problem with coding more than one random effect in lme when they aren't nested. As an example, suppose we have an experiment where we sample moths from several populations, and place the moths on different trees, and measure a trait (in this case survival of offspring, but that's less important). We

Problem with read.xport() from foreigh package (PR#7389)
Full_Name: Ruskin Chow Version: R 2.0.1 OS: Windows 2000 Submission from: (NULL) (203.169.154.66) Data imported from SAS using read.xport() in package foreign are converted to <NA> when the SAS data field consists of character strings that are only one character long. This is apparently a previously reported bug and perhaps fixed in some platform other than Windows (rw2001).Some
