getting faster results
Hey,
Can anyone answer this question. I am working with really large datasets and most of the programs I have been running take quite some time.
I heard that R may be faster in Unix. I sthis true and if so can anyone reccomend which system and requirements may allow things to go faster for?
Thanks!!

saving estimates from a for loop for later use
Thanks to the help of many on this list, I am now an R user and have
been able to write some functioning code to do matching estimation.
I have two for loops (i in 1:3, and j in 0:2). Within the loops, I
had been creating matrices of relevant estimation coefficents in order
to make lots of LaTeX tables.
Well, now I want to be able to combine the results of many different
estimations from within

Concatenating data frame
Hello, I have searched through the R-help archive and find that the easiest
way to concatenate data records in a dataframe is to use rbind()
I know we can do that using rbind, but it is slow when we are doing rbind
thousands of times to a growing list, each time adding one or two records to
the ever growing existing data because in
existingRecords<-rbind(existingRecords,

R compiler for .Net CLR
I am currently working on a project that involves using R and .Net. We're
having performance issues with R, and we're wondering if there is a way to
get around the R interpreter, particularly by compiling R directly for the
.Net CLR? We're wondering if there is any initiatives to build such a
compiler.
Thanks,
Leo

splitting a character field in R
Dear R users,
I have a dataframe with one character field, and I would like to create two
new fields (columns) in my dataset, by spliting the existing character
field into two using an existing substring.
... something that in SAS I could solve e.g. combining substr(which I am
aware exist in R) and "index" for determining the position of the pattern
within the string.
e.g. if my

Integer bit size and the modulus operator
I am a statistician and I come up to an interesting problem in
cryptography. I would like to use R since there are some statistical
procedures that I need to use.
However, I run into a problem when using the modulus operator %%.
I am using R 2.2.1 and when I calculate modulus for large numbers (that
I need with my problem) R gives me warnings. For instance if one does:

while now. As you've probably guessed I've got a SiS 7012 (which uses
the intel i8x0 modules) and alsa (either natively or OSS emulation.)
google came up with a few hits about this not working in the past,
namely:
http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-devel/2002/12/0281.html
But I'm not sure if this is still relevant.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get sound with this arrangement?
p.s. please CC me as I'm not subscribed.

how to create analog stripchart plots of x vs t (t=mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss)
Hello r-experts,
I sure could us a little help.
I have an ever updating text file with timestamped data in it. I can
reformat in anyway I want if need be but currently I have chosen to make
columns of date, time and measuresed value (comma delimeted and with the
dates and times in quotes to interpret them as strings).
Here is a small section of my text data file:

R seems to "stall" after several hours on a long series of analyses... where to start?
Not sure where to even start on this.... I'm hoping there's some debugging I
can do...
I have a loop that cycles through several different data sets (same
structure, different info), performing randomForest growth and
predictions... saving out the predictions for later study...
I get about 5 hours in (9%... of the planned iterations.. yikes!) and R just
freezes.
This happens in
