distance matrix and hclustering
Dear R Users,i am very new to R. I want your help on an issue regarding distance matrix and cluster analysis

position of a specific character
Hi All,
I'm wondering whether there is a quick way to know the position of a specific charcater in a long character:
for example
frg="((D:41.04,I:41.04):45.05,(((E:2.32,((G:0.67,J:0.67):0.44,H:1.11):1.21)"
and I would like to know that the 1st, 2nd, 26th, 27th, 28th ... character is "(", is there a quick way to do that?
Thanks!

How to run regressions over increasing time series
Hello,
I would like to run a series of regressions on my data (response variable
over time):
1) regression from T1 to T2
2) regressions from T1 through T3
3) regression from T1 through T4, etc.
I have been struggling to find a way to do this through commands, as
opposed to cutting up the data manually (my dataset has over 6000
rows/observations).
An illustrative dataset can be created thusly:

R Profiling
Dear All,
I need to do some very basic R profiling, something along the lines of:
run this whole script five times and return the average completion time.
I do not want (at this stage) delve into the details of the percentage
of the time spent in which function and doing what.
Which tools should I use?
Any recommendation is welcome.
Best Regards

creating a factor
Hi list,
I'd like to make a factor with seven 1s and three 2s using the
factor() function.
That is,
1
1
1
1
1
1
1
2

I will then bind this factor to the matrix below using cbind.data.frame().
0.56 0.48
0.22 0.59
0.32 0.64
0.26 0.60
0.25 0.38
0.24 0.45
0.56 0.67
0.78 0.97
0.87 0.79
0.82 0.85

subsetting tables
Hi guys,
one of the questions where you need a real human instead of a search engine,
so it would be great if you could help.
I have a matrix of z-scores which I would like to filter, sometimes
columnwise, sometimes rowwise. Data looks like this:
Allstar hsa.let.7a hsa.let.7a.1 hsa.let.7a.2
2 0.87 0.79 -0.57 1.07
3 0.67 -1.14 -0.78 -0.95

oh323 implementation 0.67 has call-id problem
I am trying oh323(version 0.67) , make call from sip UA to h323 gateway,
can't get Call-id pass from sip UA to h323 gateway, h323 always gets
call-ID sent from Asterisk as *. are there any configure to pass
the correct call-id from sip UA to h323 gateway? or this is a bug in
oh323 0.67?
how about oh323 0.73 ?

help getting recent pxelinux to work
I have a Dell 1550 that has Intel's 4.0.17 PXE 2.0 build 083. I am only able
to boot using pxelinux 0.67 and older. 0.70 gets to where it would load the
kernel and ramdisk and stops. Later releases just start spewing register
data non stop:
AX00000
BX00000
EX00000
and so on (numbers not real).
Normally I would look at the code and try to fix this myself but my x86 asm
skills are non

matrix creation
Hello,
I am trying to create multiple matrices (to run a PVA) but can't import all
of them from a .csv without the numbers treated as labels and not factors.
I can enter the matrix slowly:

0.09,0.166666667,0.31,0.42,NA,0.00, 0.00,0,0.00,0.00,NA,0.00,

Constructing a transition matrix
Hi,
I would like to construct a transition matrix from a data frame with
annual transitions of marked plants.
plant<-c(1:6)
class<-c("seed","seed", "seed", "veg", "rep", "rep")
fate<-c("dead", "veg","veg","rep", "rep", "veg")
trans<-data.frame(plant, class, fate)

knncat question

and get misclass rate

Training set misclass rate: 36.88%
then I try to calculate prediction accuracy by the following:

(knncat.m,training.new,training.new,train.classcol=5,newdata.classcol=5)

xyplot() does not plot legends with "relation=free" scales
Hi all,
I have this problem with lattice that xyplot() won't draw some of my axis labels if the type (i.e. the relation argument) of scales is set as free. For example, in the plot below, I would want it to also show:
1. the labels E1,...E6 below the 10th panel (i.e. 3rd row, 2 col)....just as it is now done below the 12th panel....
2. as well as the labels (2,4,6,8) on the top of panels 1

Lattice equivalent of par(mfrow = )
Dear r-helpers,
Does anyone have a straightforward example of putting together three
unrelated (expect for a common y-axis) xyplot() figures in what would
be in base graphics a par(mfrow = c(1, 3)) arrangement?

I have a big data set "mydata" with repeated observation and some missing

1 0 2 0 1
1 0 3 NA 1
1 0 4 1 0

x and y lengths differ
I have a problem with R. I try to compute the confidence interval for my
df. When I want to create the plot I have this problem: Error in
xy.coords(x, y, xlabel, ylabel, log) : 'x' and 'y' lengths differ.
I try this code:
library(dplR)
df.rwi <- detrend(rwl = df, method = "Spline",nyrs=NULL)
write.table(df.rwi,file="rwi.txt",quote=FALSE,row.names=TRUE)

converting MATLAB -> R | element-wise operation
Why anything but sweep?
The fundamental data type in Matlab is a matrix... they don't have vectors, they have Nx1 matrices and 1xM matrices.
Vectors don't have any concept of "row" vs. "column". Straight division is always elementwise with recycling as needed, and matrices are really vectors in row-major order:
1 2 3
4 5 6
is really
1 4 2 5 3 6

incompatibilities between 0.90 and 0.99?
Maybe this is dumb, but I seem to be having problems reading a file saved in R
v. 0.99 into R 0.90.1 (in a different machine).
I did

then I tried to read that data file in R 0.90.1:
>load("test1.RData")
Error in load("test1.RData") : restore file corrupted -- no data loaded
