slow R start up
Hi,
I want to use R within a unix shell script where I repeatedly open
and close R (doing some computation within R whilst it is open). i.e.
something like
#!/bin/sh
R --vanilla << EOF
# some R commands
EOF
# some unix commands
R --vanilla << EOF
# some R commands
EOF
# some unix commands
...etc
the problem is that since I open and close R many times, the shell
script takes a long

Possibly OT: intermittently long response times when connecting to host
I have a CentOS 5.2 server running Apache 2.2.3 (yum installed) and
drupal 6.5 on ESX 3.5. We're using Name Based Virtual Hosting on it -
2 hosts. The problem is that when I pull up a web page after not
having accessed it for ~15+ minutes it takes between 10-12s to load
fully. The 2nd page, 3rd page - and sometimes more than that - take
between 8-12 second. After that - decent performance,

[LLVMdev] More Haskell and LLVM
http://donsbot.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/evolving-faster-haskell-programs-now-with-llvm/
The timings are a bit too short (0.3s) to mean that much, but the way
his GA found the best flags is nice...

How to detect a domain shutdown with as less overhead as possible?
Hi,
I''ve just finished a simple Perl script that brings out a whole domain
from a directory (with a small config file and some <device>.gz files),
create Logical Volumes with each device, starts the domain, wait for the
domain to shutdown, push back into the *.gz the content of the LVs and
remove them. This is quite handy to launch any test machine stored on
the NFS server on one

alloc_heap_pages is low efficient with more CPUs
I am confused with a problem:
I have a blade with 64 physical CPUs and 64G physical RAM, and defined only one VM with 1 CPU and 40G RAM.
For the first time I started the VM, it just took 3s, But for the second starting it took 30s.
After studied it by printing log, I have located a place in the hypervisor where cost too much time,
occupied 98% of the whole starting time.

Error in which()
Hi all,
I'm trying to filter data into respective numbers. For example, if the
data ranges from 0 to <0.1, group the data. And so on for the rest of
the data.
There are inconsistencies in the output. For example, b1[[3]] lumps all
the 0.2s and 0.3s together while 0.6s are not in the output.
Running the function - table(f1) - shows that each of the
components/numbers has x number of

Abstract
Extension flamewars surrounding media formats inside Ogg containers
are a pain in the behind, cause problems in the adoption of said
formats, and confuse users. This modest proposal directed at the
maintainers of Vorbis, Theora, Speex and FLAC will suggest a solution
to solve these issues (and others).
