problem statement. However, the problem I described unfortunately does indeed
become a problem in this particular situation.

I think you need to explain just what you are attempting to do with
Samba, how you are doing it and what your expected outcome is. I say
this because in normal usage, Samba does respect all permissions set on
a share, but connecting locally to a Samba shares directory is another
thing.
