[Samba] Out of topic : Tool to ease conversion from Domain machine to standalone..
Hi All, Pardon the intrusion.... This question is not related to samba but I thought the highly skilled folks here might have some tips to share. I've been using Samba AD for a few years for our family and it recently occured to me that some of our older offspring might go to unversities in various parts of the country (or even abroad) and maybe not come back at all (perhaps they'll find a job there). Since their machines were joined to our AD and since we have severall GPOs, is this a disaster waiting to happen (after 180days?). Does anyone have a piece of advice to offer here? Ideally, I?d want to convert their AD account to a local one while retaining Apps, Login passwd and make sure they'll never get locked our of their own machines.. I realize I could also opt for a private VPN but that might not be practical here in the long terme.. Any tools/recommendations on this topic? Thanks for reading, Vincent

Hello Vincent, You can use the free version of the Profile Wizard https://www.forensit.com/domain-migration.html. You can download the free version using the URL https://www.forensit.com/Downloads/Profwiz.msi. User Profile Wizard is a workstation domain migration tool. It does not move, copy or delete any data. Instead it configures the existing profile ?in place? so that it can be used by the user?s new account. This makes the migration process both very fast and very safe. It can migrate from a domain back to a workgroup and vice versa. You can find the full list of features here https://www.forensit.com/domain-migration.html. Forensis also has a free version of Transwiz - a tool for transferring a user profile to a new machine. Transwiz works by backing up the user profile to a transfer file that you can then restore on another machine. I used their tools multiple times and never had any issues. Here's a link to the list of their free tools https://www.forensit.com/downloads.html. Please let me know if you have any questions. Best regards, Matt On Mon, Jan 31, 2022 at 3:44 PM Vincent S. Went through something similar when my company had to move a lot of computers from one domain to another. In short, you need to create local accounts.???? Under c:\users this means you will see both "someuser" (from the original domain) and "someuser.MACHINENAME" or something similar.?? The local user will need to be given access to the old provide directory, so he or she can copy documents, pictures, browser favorites, and other folders. You may also need to copy stuff from C:\Users\someuser\AppData\Local and C:\Users\someuser\AppData\Local if you are trying preserve settings. Alternately, you could probably create a local user, have the person login as the local user, then logout.? Then go thru the registry to try to remap the old profile directory to the new user but that is probably a big pain. On 1/31/2022 3:43 PM, Vincent S.
