I see only upsides to always running an AD-DC in a linux container, regardless of what hardware you use. Filesystem-independent snapshots are a very useful feature, and this makes it trivial to migrate your DC from one hardware platform to another. And in this case using the hardware for other purposes is expected.>> >> So You're saying there'd be no harm keeping the VM aside but pointing >> all members at the physical box as primary destination? > > There would be no problem with using a VM as another DC (though I would > update the OS and Samba) and you could point your clients to both for > DNS. > > Rowland > >> > >

[Samba] ODP: ODP: Primary DC migration / upgrade
Just ordered all I need to build a tiny PC box for less than 120 gbp ? :) and You did not include what's needed to connect a 3.5" hdd that I mentioned - bigger case, cabling, power supply for that drive (mentioned it was a hdd, may have overlooked the 3.5" variety of it) - this comes for free with pretty much any mini itx pc case & mobo. Yes, it will sip a bit more power, but overall I believe this to be a much less problematic setup. Either way I thought running AD DC as a VM was beneficial, but for a good while now I've been observing that clients are losing connection to the dc, and when that happens noone can log on with domain credentials. Could well be I messed something up with either my VM, Samba config, network config (changed router recently) or any combination of these, but I feel like I need a fresh start here, and also it won't hurt to build a new tiny pc before Christmas ? This will kill three birds with one stone - new DC, backup hdd will go out of my main work PC, and I'll have some toys to play with ? Cheers, ________________________________ Od: samba <samba-bounces at lists.samba.org> w imieniu u?ytkownika Rowland Penny via samba <samba at lists.samba.org> Wys?ane: wtorek, 7 grudnia 2021 18:00 Do: sambalist <samba at lists.samba.org> Temat: Re: [Samba] ODP: Primary DC migration / upgrade On Tue, 2021-12-07 at 16:37 +0000, Krzysztof Kucyba?a wrote:> Thanks for the reply, > I considered Rasberry Pi, but I want this box to also keep a backup > hdd that will rsync from a NAS box that I have that runs network > shares among lots of other things (the primary dc VM as well which is > a bit problematic).A Samba AD DC (like a normal Windows AD DC) should only be used for authentication, but it isn't unknown for one to be used for other purposes.> Gearing a Pi4b to do that will cost me a fair bit more than the > simplest AMD SoC mobo with a few required gizmos, and arguably it > will be less customizable. Are you sure about that ?
