Buchan, Thanks for the info. At his point I think I will give XFS a shot. It sounds like it might be a more mature solution than the ACLs for ext2/ext3 approach. I still have not got a solution to the issue of backing up external SMB shares complete with their ACL metadata. I went to Amanda's site, and they use Samba to backup WIndows machines. And from what I understand smbclient with the tar option does handle the NT ACLs. If anyone has a solution to this issue, I would appreciate knowing about it. Even if it is a commercial product (that runs on Linux).
