samba - Jan 2002 - smbpasswd does not find user entries

Hi,
whenever i try to create or change a user with ambpasswd i get back the
following message:
Failed to find entry for user $user
Failed to modify password entry for user $user

Whats wrong there?

Hello,

maybe the user you want to add to smbpasswd doesn't exist in the OS.
You can't add a new user to the smbpasswd if this user doesn't exist
in the OS. Look also at the manpages.

Maybe you should try:

smbpasswd -a <username>

to add the user. smbpasswd <username> will only change an existing entry.
