samba - Jan 2002 - Swat and status

Here's a common problem that I seem to also have with Samba 2.2.2 on Solaris
8.  The status window of swat shows that smbd is running and nmbd is not.
In a terminal window I can show that in fact nmbd is running.  This happens
in both inetd and deamon startup configurations (I only tired one at a
time).  In addition, when I click on 'stop smbd', the smbd does in fact
stop
but the status window does not show the update.

What is the problem?
