Hi Dave,
If you have Unix Apps AND Win Apps both accessing files on the same share,
you
probably want to have the following locking options on that share;
locking = yes
strict locking = yes
and
use oplocks = no
You are going to pay a performance price on the Windows side, but this
should ensure that your Unix and Win apps don't step on each other...

Does the parameter "locking = no" in the share details turn this
off? I
ask because I inherited the little SAMBA installation we've got and all my
shares seem to have this parameter set.
I believe it is set to "yes" by default so would removing this
parameter
enforce the standard 'locking' you describe below.

it does the locking ... it's handeled by the OS and smbfs in the kernel
...
