Hello All (and perhaps Kevin Wilson ?), I found this email conversation below, in the Mailing List archive. (It's quite a story to read, sorry.) I have the exact same problem: I can see my shares from any Windows machine (Win 2K and Win ME) without any problems. But I cannot install the printer (connected to the Linux server) on the Win 2K (or XP) machine. I can install and print from the Windows Me machine without any problem. I have been looking at both the HP.com and Microsoft.com sites, but they always refer to the installation CD-ROM of Windows 2000. There are no separate drivers available. The problem is: I don't know where to find the installation files (*.inf) or printer drivers on that CD-ROM they keep on referring me to! I was hoping Kevin Wilson or anyone else could specify his previous answer a bit more. Or is there any other way, I can get a simple DeskJet printer to work via Samba for Windows 2000 ?? Kind Regards, Dimitry Vink ------------------------------------------------------------- From: kevin.wilson@ntlworld.com Date: 2001-09-15 11:07:16 Hello, I have had this before, I am running SUSE 6.4 with Samba 2.2.0 acting as a PDC for a NT4 Workstation and a NT2000 Workstation. How I got around it, was to use the drivers from the Windows server CD (a directory on the CD called Printers). If the drivers needed were for a NT4 Workstation, then NT4 Server CD was needed. If it was for NT2000 Workstation, then NT2000 Server CD was needed. This is how I got around it, A don't know if it is a bug or just the way it works. Hope this helps. This will kill driver downloads though and is not really the recommended configuration. chau, jerry --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hewlett-Packard http://www.hp.com SAMBA Team http://www.samba.org -- http://www.plainjoe.org "Sam's Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours" 2ed. This fix seems all well and good, unless you want the clients to download the drivers from the samba server. Does anyone have any idea how to make this portion work? I've been beating my head against the monitor with this one... -----Original Message----- From: Dimitry Vink [mailto:dimitry_vink@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 7:57 AM To: jerry@samba.org Cc: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: Re: Printing with SAMBA and a Windows 2000 Client... !?? Like Jerry mentioned already; '...and is not really the recommended configuration.' Just to get it to work; I guess I want to prevent the Win 2k client to download the printer drivers from the Samba server. That's where the problem starts for me at this moment. But, I'm also really curious what the 'recommended configuration' would be. I can't really help you out on this one, Wade. Still in the dark myself. Hi Jerry, Yes, I read your manual before, I even had a look at this mailing list. Though I'm a newbie on this, it's pretty straight forward. I think something went wrong on my machine when upgrading from 2.2.0 to 2.2.2 (source file pulled from the Samba ftp server). I thought I was running 2.2.2, but apparently I was still running 2.2.0. :-o I guess, I need to sort this out first. Thanks for you help so far. I'll let you know what comes out of it. Which part was confusing to you? _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
